Portis leads Servite win

Who needs D.J. Shoemate when you have Greg Portis?

Portis, who appears to have inherited the game-breaking skills of his former Anaheim Servite High teammate, scored three touchdowns, including one on a 94-yard kickoff return, to spearhead the Friars’ 29-17 comeback victory over Huntington Beach Edison on Friday night at Cerritos College.

The senior running back’s big-play knack played a huge role in pushing Servite (3-1), ranked No. 7 in the Southland by The Times, out of its early-game funk against the No. 11 Chargers (3-1). A 44-yard touchdown run by Portis in the second quarter swung the momentum in the Friars’ favor and they never looked back, beating their Orange County Pac-5 Division rivals for the second consecutive year.

Portis finished with 114 yards in 17 carries and Servite quarterback Cody Fajardo completed 13 of 16 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown.

Edison had a chance to win it on its final possession but had two dropped passes, including one to wide open receiver Michael Rivera on the Servite 10-yard line.

The Chargers got onto the scoreboard first on a 28-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Matt Viles to Jeff Crissman but struggled to find rhythm after their first three possessions. A four-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Davion Orphey midway through the third quarter cut Servite’s lead to 19-17. However, Edison hit another wall on its next possession when Servite defensive back Michael Marcoux recorded his second interception of the night.

Viles completed 22 of 39 passes for 246 yards and a touchdown. Orphey finished with 54 yards in 12 carries.

Xavier Edwards scored on a 11-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter and Bobby Wheatley completed the ensuing two-point conversion pass to Scotty Williams to give No. 16 Orange Lutheran (3-1) the lead for good during a 20-13 victory over Riverside North at Orange Coast College. Wheatley had a one-yard touchdown run for the Lancers (3-1), who scored the final 15 points against the Huskies (1-2). . . . Running back Malcolm Jones gained 178 yards in 18 carries for No. 9 Westlake Village Oaks Christian (4-0) during a 45-0 victory over host West Hills Chaminade (1-2). Quarterback Nick Montana completed 11 of 19 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns with one interception for the Lions. . . . San Pedro quarterback Barry Heads completed a 43-yard touchdown pass to Chase Clayton to start a 21-point fourth-quarter outburst for the Pirates (3-0) during a 24-3 nonleague victory over host L.A. Garfield (1-3). Heads completed seven of 13 passes for 120 yards and one touchdown.

Quarterback Darrian Cazarin completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Beatty with 1 minute 31 seconds left to lift Alhambra to a 21-17 come-from-behind win over La Canada. Cazarin completed 16 of 28 passes for 197 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. . . . Hector De La Rosa rushed for 82 yards in 14 carries and scored two touchdowns for visiting Huntington Park (2-1) during a 34-6 nonleague win over L.A. Manual Arts (0-3). Luis Cruz had an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and scored on a one-yard run for Huntington Park. . . . Ben Douglas had a 71-yard run for a touchdown and 51-yard reception for a touchdown for host Santa Ana Foothill (3-1) during a 27-14 win over Anaheim Canyon (2-2). Quarterback Zachary Griffith completed eight of 16 passes for 206 yards and rushed six times for 50 yards.
