It's too little, too late against the Red Stars

Wire Reports

The Sol fell to the Chicago Red Stars, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill.

The Red Stars opened the scoring in the 10th minute on a strike from U.S. national team midfielder Carli Lloyd.

Early in the second half, another U.S. international scored for Chicago; Lindsay Tarpley found the net behind Sol goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc to make it 2-0.

The Sol scored in the 90th minute when Chinese international forward Han Duan collected a pass from team captain and U.S. international Shannon Boxx, but, with the Sol pushing for a tying goal, Brazilian Cristiane clinched it for Chicago in added time.

In other news, the Brazilian club Santos said it had reached a deal to sign world player of the year Marta on an off-season loan from the Sol.

Santos said Sunday that Marta would play for the club from September until the end of the year.

She will participate in the Brazilian Cup and the first edition of the women's Copa Libertadores.

Marta is expected to wear the No. 10 jersey made famous by soccer great Pele in the 1960s.
