City attorney candidate Michael Amerian won a valuable endorsement Monday from outgoing City Controller Laura Chick, who called him the most independent candidate in the race.

“He is not a City Hall insider,” Chick said of Amerian, a 34-year-old deputy city attorney who was assigned last year to the department’s gang unit.

“Michael has been hard at work in our streets and neighborhoods fighting against gangs, domestic violence and other crimes that threaten the quality of our daily lives.

“I know his values and his principles, his ethics and his integrity -- he’s not owned by anyone now, and he’s not going to be owned by anyone,” Chick said.

Amerian’s opponent Jack Weiss, a Westside councilman, has been endorsed by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Los Angeles Police Chief Bill Bratton. Another rival, private attorney Carmen Trutanich, won endorsements from Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. Steve Cooley and Sheriff Lee Baca, who also endorsed Weiss.
