Query the gopher-hating groundskeeper

Golfers talk about wanting to bomb their tee shots, but seldom in the sport do they actually see a real explosive.

That changed last week when a golfer searching for an errant tee shot found a half-buried hand grenade near the eighth fairway of Georgia’s Augusta Municipal Golf Course, once the site of an Army base. Unsure whether the grenade was still alive, the Richmond County sheriff’s bomb squad safely detonated the device.

Quipped Steve Schrader of the Detroit Free Press about the discovery: “Better add some more bunkers.”

Gut-buster of the year

Speaking of explosives, the Class-A minor league West Michigan Whitecaps have come up with possibly the most unhealthy ballpark food item in baseball history: the Fifth Third Burger.

Named after the bank that sponsors the team, the Fifth Third features 5/3 pounds (26.7 ounces) of beef, lettuce, tomato, salsa, sour cream, chili and Fritos on an eight-inch sesame seed bun. Total calories: 4,889.

The burger costs $20, but the team points out that it feeds one to four people. If one person finishes the burger in one sitting, the team will present the fan with a Fifth Third Burger T-shirt.

Mickey Graham, the team’s director of marketing and media relations, told CNBC that he thinks it is possible that fans will show up at the park just for the feeding.

“We’ve had people come just for dinner,” Graham said. “It actually happens pretty frequently. We take our food pretty seriously.”

That’s why they call it Madness

Cleveland State’s first-round victory over Wake Forest caused the Vikings’ assistant coach, Jayson Gee, to get a little overheated when discussing the contributions of Coach Gary Waters.

“God sent Moses to free Israel. God sent Gary Waters to resurrect Cleveland State,” Gee told Yahoo Sports.com. “I really believe that. I believe that 100%. He’s a prophet. Everything that’s happening, and you can ask anybody in this locker room, is something he put down in black and white before it happened.”

Cleveland State was knocked out of the tournament in the second round by Arizona, but any prophet could have seen that one coming.

And finally

Padraig Harrington was quite impressed when he learned there is a beverage, iced tea with lemonade, named the Arnold Palmer.

“That says it all that you can go into a random restaurant and order a drink named after a professional golfer,” Harrington said. “Even Tiger Woods hasn’t got there yet.”
