Why it matters: In the Division III 100-meter final, defending state champion Randall Carroll of Los Angeles Cathedral will try to hold off his future UCLA football teammate, Sheldon Price of La Puente Bishop Amat. In Division I, Kyle Middlebrooks of Huntington Beach Fountain Valley and Kaelin Clay of Long Beach Poly will challenge Charles Saseun of Rancho Cucamonga. USC-bound Reggie Wyatt of Riverside La Sierra is favored to win Division I races in the 200, 400 and 300 intermediate hurdles.

Friday’s result

Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley 8, Long Beach Wilson 4

Top contributors: Left-hander Tyler Matzek (10-1) of Capistrano Valley did not give up a hit and struck out six in four shutout innings. Charles Pfirrmann of Capistrano Valley hit a grand slam. The scoop: Capistrano Valley opened a 6-0 lead after two innings in its playoff opener, enabling Coach Bob Zamora to pull Matzek after he threw only 38 pitches so he can come back and pitch Tuesday. “I’ve never done that in my life,” Zamora said. “I’ve got a special kid, and I want to see him pitch as often as I can.”

Why it matters: The No. 3-seeded Cougars will get to use Matzek against Orange Lutheran in a Southern Section Division I second-round game.
