The title of fastest high school sprinter in California, if not the nation, belongs to Randall Carroll of Los Angeles Cathedral, and he showed at Saturday’s Southern Section track and field championships he’s not ready to relinquish it any time soon.

The UCLA-bound Carroll won the Division III 100 meters in 10.39 seconds at Cerritos College and came back to take the 200 in 20.93, the third-fastest time in the nation this year.

There are lots of individuals seeking to challenge him, with Maxwell Dyce of Moorpark winning the Division II 100 in 10.43 and Kyle Middlebrooks of Huntington Beach Fountain Valley taking the Division I 100 in 10.51.

But Carroll, the defending state champion in both sprints, isn’t getting any slower.

“With everyone going at me, it’s showing how dedicated I am still holding the title,” he said. “No one has come and taken it away from me. But there’s a lot of good competition.”

USC-bound Reggie Wyatt of Riverside La Sierra distinguished himself with Division I victories in the 400 in 46.45, the 200 in 21.21 and the 300 intermediate hurdles in 35.74.

Robert Woods of Gardena Serra, a junior who’s one of the most recruited football players in the nation, helped his team win the Division IV boys’ title with victories in the 400 in 47.31 and the 200 in 21.43. The Serra girls also won a team title.

Sophomore Elias Gedyon of Los Angeles Loyola is gearing up for a run at a state title in the 1,600, dropping the 800.

“We’ve unleashed the tiger,” distance coach Lalo Diaz said.

Gedyon won the Division II 1,600, cruising in 4:14.14. He was beaten in the 800 by Sean Krinik of Placentia Valencia, who won in 1:51.82.

Nick Ross of Vista Murrieta cleared 7-1 to win the Division I high jump and was second in the triple jump at 50 feet 1/4 inch.

Jessica Davis of Palmdale Highland ran the third-fastest 200 time in the nation, 23.98, to win the Division I title and won the 100 in a wind-aided 11.45.
