Chatsworth to face Reseda Cleveland in City Section championship

Share

CITY SECTION DIVISION I PREVIEW

Chatsworth (29-4) vs. Reseda Cleveland (26-7)

at Dodger Stadium

Today at 2 p.m.

Why it matters: After three months of the City Section season, the championship game comes down to No. 1 vs. No. 2. Top-seeded Cleveland won the West Valley League title despite losing two of three games to the Chancellors. The difference during the regular season was that Cleveland had the most consistent pitcher in right-hander John Wilson, who’s 11-1 and will take the mound today having walked only 14 batters in 77 2/3 innings. He’ll be opposed by left-hander Mike Renner, who’s 9-2 with a 1.58 earned-run average. Chatsworth has the best fielding shortstop in the City in Kasey Toven. Cleveland has a dangerous one-two punch at the top of its lineup in Niko Garcia, who has 46 hits, and Juan Perez, who’s batting .500 with 55 hits and 30 stolen bases. In the Division II final at 11 a.m., Westchester (21-9) will face North Hills Monroe (11-14).

Top contributors: Cory Hahn of Mater Dei hit two home runs, including a grand slam. Matt Blanchard of Mater Dei struck out all four batters he faced in relief to pick up the save. Jake Clark of Norco hit a three-run home run.

The scoop: Hahn’s grand slam in the fourth inning against Matt Hobgood (11-1) wiped out a 3-2 deficit. Hobgood came in with an 0.33 ERA and a 94 mph fastball for top-seeded Norco.
