AROUND THE NATION : Cincinnati remains unbeaten

Far from perfect, No. 5 Cincinnati was good enough to stay unbeaten.

Tony Pike threw two touchdown passes in a cameo appearance Friday night, and the Bearcats overcame a self-destructive first half to beat West Virginia, 24-21, at Cincinnati for the best start in school history.

Cincinnati, 10-0 overall and 6-0 in the Big East Conference, struggled offensively because of uncharacteristic mistakes -- a fumble, a dropped touchdown pass, a missed field-goal attempt, and an interception -- all in the first half.

Isaiah Pead ran for a career-high 175 yards, and sophomore Zach Collaros threw for 205 yards in his fourth start for Pike, who is recovering from an injury to his non-throwing arm.

West Virginia is 7-3 and 3-2.

Temple rolls to win over Akron

Chester Stewart passed for two touchdowns and ran for two, leading Temple over host Akron, 56-17, to keep the Owls on track for a spot in the Mid-American Conference championship game.

The Owls (8-2, 6-0) won their eighth straight. Akron is 2-8 and 1-5.

Tennessee players to sit after arrest

Three Tennessee freshman players charged with attempted armed robbery will not play today at Mississippi.

Tennessee spokeswoman Tiffany Carpenter says the team will travel to Oxford without wide receiver NuKeese Richardson, safety Janzen Jackson and defensive back Mike Edwards.

The three 18-year-olds are accused of demanding money from three people at a gas station near Tennessee’s campus early Thursday.

Buffalo tackle is suspended for hit

Buffalo right tackle Andrew West will serve a one-game suspension for a low hit during a game Tuesday against Ohio.

West will not play Wednesday at Miami of Ohio.
