Clippers reserves get the minutes but not the points

Share

Reporting from Philadelphia —

The usual suspects took down the Clippers — turnovers and lack of defensive stops, among other things — and their bench didn’t lend much of a hand in the team’s loss against the 76ers on Wednesday.

Reserve forward Thaddeus Young had 12 points for Philadelphia, just two points shy of the entire Clippers bench. Clippers rookie forward Al-Farouq Aminu had two points in 15-plus minutes and veteran forward Rasual Butler, who played college ball locally at La Salle University, went scoreless in nearly 17 minutes, taking just two shots.

Clippers Coach Vinny Del Negro was blunt when asked to comment on his bench’s play, taking a quick glance at the score sheet.

“Not much,” he said. “Some good minutes for a lot of guys but not much production there.”

Starters Baron Davis and DeAndre Jordan slowed in the second half after strong starts in the first. And Blake Griffin, who scored 20 points, had two in the final quarter.

“It was more so playing one against five or two against five, not like five-on-five basketball,” Davis said. “We’ve got to do a better job of just playing better five-man basketball. I thought the beginning of the third quarter was kind of scrappy.

“The game wasn’t really going anywhere till about the six-minute mark and from that point we got sloppier and sloppier. Not that they played better than us. They just got opportunity buckets. Once you get a game like this, a seven-point lead, a 10-point lead, that means a lot, especially when both teams are struggling to score.”

More Philly rewind

All losses are not created equal, but Del Negro was particularly displeased by what transpired against the 76ers. Especially after he gave the Clippers something of a break by cancelling the morning shootaround.

Any word or words to finish the trip?

“Wake up,” Del Negro said. “Got to wake up and play. It’s your job to play and play hard, and if guys aren’t playing hard, I’ve got to try to mix-match lineups, which makes it even more difficult. So the veteran guys got to step up. The younger guys that are taking more of a load have to have more leadership and make plays for us.

“We’ve got to play together. One person can’t do it alone. Two people can’t do it alone. It’s a team.”
