Alec Fisher leads La Jolla Bishop’s to a 40-14 victory over Stockton Brookside Christian

Alec Fisher scored five touchdowns — four rushing and one receiving — and La Jolla Bishop’s pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 40-14 victory over Stockton Brookside Christian in the Division IV state bowl game Friday evening at Home Depot Center.

Fisher finished with 167 yards in 23 carries and three receptions for 33 yards, quarterback Joey Moreno completed six of 11 passes for 95 yards and safety Robbie Stiefler returned an interception 39 yards for a touchdown for Bishop’s (14-0), the San Diego Section Division V champion.

Brookside Christian quarterback Tony Rodriguez began the game with 46 touchdown passes and four interceptions but had two passes picked off in the first half, and Bishop’s scored off both turnovers. Wide receiver Larry Fullard caught seven passes for 86 yards and two touchdowns for Brookside Christian (12-1), the smallest school ever to participate in the state bowls with an enrollment of 111. Fullard’s 16-yard reception and two-point conversion catch pulled the Sac-Joacquin Section Division VI champions to within 20-14 with 7:39 left in the third quarter.

Fisher ran for scores of three, one, seven and eight yards and caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Moreno that gave Bishop’s a 20-6 lead with 22 seconds left in the first half. His four rushing touchdowns were one shy of the state bowl record set by Tyler Gaffney of San Diego Cathedral in the 2008 Division II game and tied the Small Schools mark set the same year by John Murayama of San Juan Capistrano St. Margaret’s.
