Jordan Farmar, Shannon Brown step forward for Lakers

Reporting from San Antonio

Now that Lamar Odom is starting in place of an injured Andrew Bynum, the Lakers have lost one of their key reserves.

That meant somebody had to step into that role that Odom normally occupies and become a factor off the bench.

It turned out to be Jordan Farmar and Shannon Brown Wednesday night during the Lakers’ 92-83 victory over the San Antonio Spurs at AT&T Center.

“It’s not so much that Lamar is starting, it’s that Andrew is out,” Brown said. “That kind of changes the whole team’s attack as far as inside-out. When we come off the bench, we’ve got to be more efficient with execution, more efficient on defense.”

Farmar had 11 points. He made four of eight shots, including three of four from three-point range.

Brown was three for five from the field, making both of his three-pointers. He finished with eight points.

“I think it gives us a little more opportunities,” Farmar said. “The rotation changes a lot. Kobe [Bryant] is in with us a lot also. He dominates the ball a lot, but he’s looking for us. He knows that we are willing and able to knock down shots. I’m just trying to stay aggressive and confident the whole time.”

Brown made back-to-back three-pointers in the third quarter, giving the Lakers their first lead since the first quarter.

The lead didn’t last, but the Lakers had finally gotten some momentum.

“I was just taking my time,” Brown said. “My teammates found me. If they don’t find me at the right time, I probably have to drive or make something else happen. But they found me at the right time so I could go catch the ball and get off a good shot.”

Farmar missed his first two shots, but he didn’t shy away.

He made three of four in the second quarter.

“I just want to get into an open spot,” Farmar said. “We have great passers. I just want to be in their vision where they can see you and knock them down.”

Brown did his work in just 13 minutes, 57 seconds.

Farmar did his work in 26:23.

“I want to win,” Farmar said. “I want to help this team win. I sat down with the coaches last week and they told me some of the things they want me to do to help this team win.”
