Thierry Henry will miss game against Galaxy

Thierry Henry will miss the New York Red Bulls’ high-profile game against the Galaxy and David Beckham on Friday night because of a sprained right knee.

The Red Bulls said Tuesday that the French forward had sprained the medial collateral ligament in the knee during a Sept. 4 loss at Real Salt Lake. He played with the injury last week and incurred a $2,000 fine for a celebratory kick following teammate Mehdi Ballouchy’s goal, a kick that sent the ball into Kevin Hartman and injured the Dallas goalkeeper’s knee.

The Red Bulls want to ensure Thierry “is healthy for our final matches as we hope to qualify for the playoffs and make a run towards the MLS Cup,” General Manager Erik Soler said.

Martinez-Williams fight scheduled

Middleweight champion Sergio Martinez will return to the site of his title triumph when he defends his WBC belt Nov. 20 against Paul Williams at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Martinez (45-2-2) won the belt with an impressive unanimous decision over Kelly Pavlik in April, four months after a thrilling split-decision loss to Williams in the same building.

Their rematch will be for the middleweight title, but at a catch weight of 157 pounds.

Williams (39-1) has won six straight since his only loss, beating such notable fighters as Winky Wright and Verno Phillips, and avenging his defeat to Carlos Quintana. He’s coming off a technical decision against Kermit Cintron in May.

The fight will be shown live on HBO.

Defenseman Tom Poti has signed a two-year, $5.75-million contract extension with the Washington Capitals.

Poti will receive $3 million in the 2011-12 season, and $2.75 million in 2012-13. The $14 million, four-year deal he signed when he joined Washington as a free agent in 2007 was set to expire after the coming season.

The 33-year-old Poti had four goals, 20 assists and 42 penalty minutes in 70 games last season, helping Washington finish with the NHL’s best regular-season record. He ranked fifth among league defensemen with a career-best plus-26 rating and ranked second on the Capitals with 121 blocked shots.

Poti has 67 goals, 251 assists and 578 penalty minutes in 787 career NHL games with the Capitals, Edmonton Oilers and New York’s Rangers and Islanders.

The Capitals also said they signed free-agent goalie Brandon Anderson to a three-year entry-level contract.

A federal appeals court in New Orleans revived the Securities and Exchange Commission’s insider-trading lawsuit against Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, saying it was “plausible” he had agreed not to sell company stock to avoid a loss after receiving confidential information.

The case was sent back to a lower court in Dallas for further discovery and, if necessary, a trial. The appeals court declined to rule on whether Cuban was wrong in selling the stock, saying that was a question for the Dallas court.

The SEC’s civil lawsuit accuses the Dallas billionaire of selling shares in the Internet search engine company Mamma.com Inc. in 2004, avoiding a $750,000 loss after learning the company was going to offer stock to private investment companies at a discounted rate.

The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club announced it will release, retroactively, additional money from its recently concluded 2010 racing season. Horsemen will soon receive more than $900,000 in additional purses.

The 71st Del Mar meeting closed with a total handle of more than $449million and an average daily handle of better than $12 million. These numbers showed a decline from 2009 but the track ran fewer races.
