“Silver Linings Playbook” director David O. Russell may have been in the running for a screenplay award Sunday night, but on the Golden Globe Awards red carpet, he was keeping his expectations low.

“The only way you maintain serenity at all is by feeling like you’re not owed anything,” he said, shifting his weight excitedly from foot to foot. “You’re just grateful that you made the film and nothing else need come your way.”

He said that the night before the nominations came out he called his actors and thanked them.

“That’s how you stay at peace,” Russell said.

That said, he knew he was making a very special film early on during the intense 33-day shooting schedule for “Silver Linings.”

“You could feel the chemistry between Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, and between Bradley and [Robert] De Niro,” he said.

Though a win Sunday would’ve boded well for Oscar, Russell wasn’t going to think about that. He was still surprised about the Kathryn Bigelow (“Zero Dark Thirty”) and Ben Affleck (“Argo”) Oscar-nomination snubs.

“They are wonderful filmmakers,” he said of Bigelow and Affleck. “And their films are fantastic. You always tell your brothers and sisters in filmmaking how much solidarity you feel with them.”
