It seems like everybody wants to write a cookbook these days. But there’s a lot more to it than just gathering a bunch of great recipes. Two of Southern California’s finest writers will take you behind the scenes May 3 at Surfas Culinary District in Culver City in a combination cooking class and discussion sponsored by the Los Angeles County Bar Assn.

Between them, Martha Rose Shulman and Clifford Wright have written more than 45 cookbooks. Wright’s “Mediterranean Feast” was named the best book of the year by the James Beard Foundation in 2000. Shulman’s books include the award-winning “Provencal Light” and she is the Recipes for Health columnist for the New York Times.

In addition to the authors talking about researching and writing recipes (as well as demonstrating them and offering tastings), the program will also feature a discussion of culinary legal issues led by F. Jay Dougherty, professor of law and director of the Entertainment and Media Law Center at Loyola Law School, and Nancy L. McCullough, a Los Angeles intellectual property attorney.

The legal discussion will include a review of copyright and trade secret law, the protection of intellectual property interests in recipes, cooking techniques and “secret” formulas for food products, and will go over the leading case law in these areas.

The event will last from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The program is $65 for Bar Assn. members and $85 for others, and includes food, beverages and the lecture program. All guests will also receive a 5% discount on food and a 10% discount on selected nonfood merchandise from Surfas.

Surfas Culinary District, 3975 Landmark St., Culver City, (310) 559-4770. For more information, contact the bar association at (213) 896-6560.
