Winchester Fire in Riverside County
The Winchester Fire broke out about 3:30 p.m near the corner of 9th Avenue and Winchester Road in the unincorporated community of Winchester, about 25 miles southeast of Riverside. Winds whipped the fire, which initially spread quickly, but firefighters gained the upper hand by sunset. At one point, flames threatened 50 structures. Residents were allowed to return to their homes at 8 p.m.
