Twisting and turning, Montano broke off runs of 59, 43 and 36 yards on the night to give the Cowboys the kind of run-pass balance that wins championships.

Riverside North 28, Mater Dei 10
It was only one play among many, but for the Riverside North football team, it was a reflection of the entire game and couldn’t have been drawn up any better.

For Santa Ana Mater Dei, it wasn’t a pretty picture.

Midway through the fourth quarter, North’s Jesse Spence fumbled the ball at the end of a short punt return, only to see teammate Damon Morton scoop up the loose ball and fall forward five more yards.

The Huskies (3-0), No. 4 in The Times’ rankings, were seemingly always going forward as they pushed ahead to a convincing victory over Mater Dei in a nonleague game Friday at Riverside College.

For No. 13 Mater Dei (0-3), it was simply another step in a direction the Monarchs aren’t used to heading.

Mater Dei defeated North, 16-13, last season but, playing one of the toughest nonleague schedules in the Southland, suffered its third loss in a row after previous defeats to Orange Lutheran and Mission Viejo.

“We don’t have it together right now and [North is] a great football team,” Mater Dei Coach Bruce Rollinson said.

The Huskies proved it by beating the Monarchs with their superior speed.

North’s Josh Barnett rushed for 121 yards and three touchdowns in 11 carries, and Morton had five receptions for 114 yards and a touchdown on a 45-yard pass play from his brother, Dion, on the first play of the game. Dion Morton finished eight-of-11 passing for 146 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions.

“I’ve been looking forward to this game all year,” Damon Morton said. “They’re always a great team and we knew if we could beat them, we could look forward to an exciting season.”

Mater Dei, which won five Southern Section championships in the 1990s, had not started a season with an 0-3 record since 1968, though the Monarchs have had two three-game losing streaks since. The last time was in 2001 when they lost to Mission Viejo, Concord De La Salle and Huntington Beach Edison before advancing to the Division I semifinals.

The Huskies scored on their first three possessions. Barnett scored on a six-yard run for a 21-7 lead midway through the second quarter.

Mater Dei kept itself within striking distance with a 22-yard field goal by Pageniun Parvin in the final seconds of the first half, but the Monarchs couldn’t muster anything the rest of the way.

North sealed its victory with a 16-yard scoring run by Barnett after Spence’s fumble on the punt return.

Servite 28, Chino 21
The fourth quarter lasts only 12 minutes, and that’s about how long it took for Anaheim Servite to go from young and inexperienced to seasoned and tested.

Servite, with no returning starters on offense, rallied for two fourth-quarter touchdowns to come from behind to defeat Chino in its biggest test of the season Friday night at Chino High.

Omar Ramiro ran untouched around the right side of the line for 17 yards and the game-winning score with 3 minutes 9 seconds to play.

Chino, ranked No. 16 by The Times, started its next possession at its 26-yard line and drove to Servite’s 14, but a pass on fourth down and eight yards came up three yards short with 1:08 left and Servite (3-0) ran out the clock.

“For this team, this is huge,” Servite Coach Larry Toner said. “We don’t have experience and our talent isn’t overwhelming, but tonight we faced a challenge and had to swing from the bottom.

“I don’t think you find out about your team until that happens. This was a good statement of character.”

Chino (2-1) took a 21-14 lead when quarterback Aaron Garcia connected with Oscar Roman on a 30-yard scoring pass play with 3:10 left in the third quarter.

The teams then exchanged punts before Ramiro caught a swing pass from quarterback Mike Lawrence and raced 70 yards up the right sideline to tie the score, 21-21.

Servite then held Chino on three downs, then took over at its 39-yard line after a Chino punt. A 13-yard pass from Lawrence to Chris Reinert on a third-and-12 play and an 18-yard run by Lawrence helped set up Ramiro’s winning touchdown.

Lawrence completed 12 of 24 passes for 260 yards and two touchdowns. Matt Reinert caught five passes for 92 yards.

Running back R.J. Stanford led Chino with 148 yards rushing in 13 carries.

Servite running back Ken Ashley, who last week set a school record with five rushing touchdowns, left the game at halftime with a dislocated thumb and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Cary Harris rushed for 177 yards and two touchdowns for the host Knights, who capitalized on two early turnovers.

Harris scored on runs of 92 and 11 yards in the fourth quarter as No. 12 Notre Dame (2-1) rebounded from last week’s 31-7 loss to No. 6 Westlake Village Westlake.

On the second play from scrimmage, Palmdale quarterback JaVonte Holmes fumbled the exchange from center and Anthony Santa Croce recovered for Notre Dame at the Palmdale 14-yard line. Three plays later, Brandon Clayton scored on a two-yard run.

Chauncey Fagan blocked a punt by Benjamin Royce on Palmdale’s next possession and the ball rolled out of bounds at the Falcon 11. Tesoro (3-0) scored the go-ahead touchdown with 6 minutes 9 seconds remaining in the game on a six-yard touchdown pass from Nick Nelson to tight end Erik Hamren.

Irvine moved the ball to midfield on Jamaal Villa’s 20-yard punt return with four seconds remaining and set up for a 65-yard field goal, but Mike Edwards couldn’t handle the snap and was tackled to end the game.

Westlake 25, Hart 24
At first, the Newhall Hart offense had to travel 99 yards in order to prevent a winless to start the season, then its defense had to keep Westlake Village Westlake from going two and a half yards.

The offense did what it needed to when Sean Norton connected with Kevin Ciccone on a 99-yard touchdown pass to give Hart a seven-point lead Thursday night at College of the Canyons. The defense, however couldn’t stop a 75-yard Westlake touchdown drive nor the ensuing two-point conversion with 41 seconds left.

The two-point conversion, a pass from Westlake quarterback Rudy Carpenter to Tahj Mowry, furnished Hart with its third consecutive loss to start the season. Hart, a seven-time Southern Section champion ranked No. 8 by The Times, has not started 0-3 since 1985.

“It’s hard to fathom 0-3,” Hart Coach Mike Herrington said. “But we knew it could happen.”

Hart has played one of the toughest nonleague schedules in California. The Indians have lost to No. 1 Los Alamitos, No. X Ventura St. Bonaventure and now No. 6 Westlake. They have lost those games by a total of 11 points.

After Hart’s 99-yard touchdown, the longest scoring pass in school history, gave the Indians a 24-17 lead, Westlake got the ball at its 25 yard line with 4:44 to play. Carpenter completed four of six passes for 66 yards on the drive, capped by a 17-yard touchdown to Michael Stuart. Westlake Coach Jim Benkert had little doubt about going for the win.

“The only question was what were we going to run,” Benkert said. “We’re not gonna battle like we did to get a tie.”

Carpenter completed 15 of 30 passes for 240 yards and two touchdowns. Stuart caught 11 of those passes for 183 yards and both touchdowns. Mowry had 99 yards and a touchdown in 19 carries. Norton completed 15 of 34 passes for 232 yards and a touchdown.

Perry was never able to break a big run and finished with 75 yards on 20 carries. In the first two games, the tailback had 593 yards and seven touchdowns.

He also lost a critical fumble in the fourth quarter, which the Mustangs’ Brian Jackson recovered.

“It was just a hard-fought game where the team with the least amount of mistakes won,” said Banning first-year Coach Mike Alexander.

Mira Costa took advantage of a fumbled opening kickoff by Banning as quarterback Brian Seidensticker’s one-yard plunge made it 7-0. The Pilots (2-1) tied it later in the quarter on Robert Martinez’s one-yard sneak but the Mustangs took the lead for good before halftime on a 12-yard touchdown run by Pringle.
