Mike McDonald completed 12 of 16 passes for 312 yards including five touchdowns for host Burbank (2-2) at Burroughs High. Jason Barbic rushed for 124 yards and three touchdowns in 11 carries and caught a 42-yard touchdown pass while Kelly Blatz caught eight passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns for the Bulldogs. Shaun Kermah rushed for 171 yards and three touchdowns in 21 carries for Hoover (2-2), which trailed 49-12 at halftime.

Senior Chuck Wilson had 11 carries for 143 yards and two touchdowns and on defense had two interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery and defensive end Corey Melander had seven tackles and a forced fumble for visiting Linfield Christian (3-0-1). Webb drops to 1-2.

Placentia Valencia 33, Corona del Mar 3
Placentia Valencia scored touchdowns following three turnovers and Rylon Thomas rushed for 103 yards in 18 carries and scored twice to lead the Tigers to a 33-3 victory Saturday night against Corona del Mar at Newport Harbor High.

Valencia (4-0), ranked No. 4 in Southern Section Division VI, took a 6-3 lead on a 72-yard fumble return by safety Rashad Chambers late in the first quarter and never looked back. A muffed punt set up a seven-yard touchdown reception by Josh Racobs midway through the second quarter, and Thomas scored on a 28-yard run following Dedreck Floyd’s interception late in the third quarter for a 26-3 lead.

Corona del Mar (3-2) is ranked No. 5 in Division IX.

Capistrano Valley’s defense recorded four interceptions as the Cougars (2-2) defeated a team with a winning record for the first time in two years. Northwood is 2-1-1.

Senior running back Victor Piceno scored on a 65-yard run at the 7:55 mark of the third quarter and finished 117 yards in 14 carries and also caught three passes for 68 yards for El Monte (4-0) at California High.

The Lions went on an 84-yard drive that ate up 8 minutes, 8 seconds of the fourth quarter before Raul Araiza kicked a 33-yard field goal to round out the scoring.

Sophomore middle linebacker Anthony Chavez had six tackles, and has a team-leading 41 tackles on the season for El Monte, which recorded its second consecutive shutout.

Foothill 28, El Modena 22
Zach Leffel rushed for 161 yards in 18 carries with two touchdowns to lead Foothill (2-2). Daniel Kirkpatrick passed for 158 yards with two touchdowns, while Matt Fosberg caught five passes for 78 yards and a score. El Modena is 1-3.

Hacienda Heights Wilson 14, Montebello 13
Rene Cerda completed 10 of 12 passes for 107 yards and Alex Ceja had 102 yards in 14 carries including a touchdown for visiting Montebello (1-3).

La Salle 57, Keppel 22
George Colton passed for 214 yards and two touchdowns, with Michael Cates hauling in four passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns for visiting La Salle. Jesse Ander added five catches for 72 yards for the Lancers (4-1). Keppel falls to 0-4.

Mater Dei 20, Edison 14
A year ago, Huntington Beach Edison running back Joshua Gage was stopped one yard short of the goal line on the final play in a six-point loss to Santa Ana Mater Dei.

Friday, before a capacity crowd at Orange Coast College, the Chargers were still a yard short when it counted.

Needing five yards for a first down at the 14-yard line to keep a drive alive in the last minute, quarterback Brian Shrock was knocked out of bounds by Michael Hardwick at the 15, and Edison, ranked third in the Southland, fell to No. 6 Mater Dei, 20-14.

Both defenses were as good as advertised, but two third-quarter plays -- the only two passes completed by Mater Dei quarterback Kyle Woody in the second half -- were the difference.

Woody, who had averaged 28 yards per completion this season, connected on touchdowns of 65 and 76 yards to Robert Dubrish only 52 seconds apart. Coupled with first-half field goals of 29 and 30 yards by Adam Sutter, Mater Dei (3-1) had enough points to win again.

“It was a little shaky in the first half,” said Woody, who completed three of eight passes for 143 yards and an interception. “On that second one, [Dubrish] made a great catch. I said, ‘What How can he be that wide open?’.”

Edison (4-1) had not given up a long play all season, but no one was covering Dubrish while protecting a 14-12 lead with 8:51 left in the third quarter.

“That was our emphasis the whole week,” said frustrated Edison Coach Dave White. “You can’t give a good team two big plays.”

Mater Dei dominated early, holding the ball more than 18 of the 24 minutes of the first half. But twice at the 12-yard line the Monarchs kicked field goals, and at the 27, they botched a field-goal try.

Edison, which also missed a field-goal attempt from the six-yard line, converted a fumble into a 39-yard scoring drive, with Shrock passing 23 yards to Joshua Gage for a 7-6 lead.

From its own 27 with 1:05 left in the half, Edison’s Abel Cardona triggered a rally with a 40-yard run, and Shrock hit Thomas Marcin for 28 yards with 17 seconds left for a 14-6 lead.

Then came the Monarchs’ third-quarter turnaround, followed by their defensive plays in the fourth--Gregory Moses recovered a fumble at the Monarch 23 and Hardwick stopped Shrock.

“Our defense is as good as anybody’s, including theirs,” Mater Dei Coach Bruce Rollinson said. “And then we hit the bombs.”

Mission Viejo 41, Long Beach Poly 14
Mission Viejo took on the team expected to provide it with its biggest challenge on Friday night, but Long Beach Poly hardly caused the Diablos to blink on their way to a runaway nonleague victory at Long Beach Cabrillo.

Chane Moline rushed for 200 yards in 20 carries, quarterback Mark Sanchez had three touchdown passes and Mission Viejo’s defense forced four turnovers and had four sacks.

The Diablos (4-0), ranked No. 1 in the state by Cal-High Sports, did not punt until less than two minutes remained in the game.

Nick Reed recovered a fumble on the Mission Viejo 41-yard line to end Poly’s first drive and sacked Theo Scott to put a halt to the second.

Mission Viejo followed its second defensive stop by marching 85 yards in nine plays to take a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter. Moline’s 57-yard run was the big play of the drive, putting the ball at the Jackrabbit eight. The Diablos scored two plays later on a five-yard touchdown pass from Sanchez to Brett Alvarez.

Moline scored his second touchdown on a two-yard run with 1:54 left in the first half. He set up his touchdown with runs of 28 and six yards. , finishing the first half with 120 yards in 11 carries.

The Jackrabbits (3-1), ranked No. 2 in the state, committed two turnovers in the first half, but those didn’t hurt as much as their six penalties for 50 yards.

A late hit along the sideline moved Mission Viejo past midfield on its second touchdown drive and a holding call nullified a 34-yard reception by tight end Raymond Sholes late in the first half.

Poly failed to capitalize on Mission Viejo’s only turnover, a botched snap from center that was picked up by William Alo and returned 38 yards to the Diablo 17 with 14 seconds left in the half. But the Jackrabbits threw an incomplete pass, then missed a 33-yard field goal attempt as time expired.

In addition to forcing two turnovers, Mission Viejo’s defense held the Jackrabbits to 86 total yards in the first half, including only 24 yards rushing.

“To hold Poly to 14 points,” said Marty Mikkelsen, Mission Viejo’s defensive coordinator, “if somebody had told me that before we had started, I would have taken it.”

Poly tried its luck with an on-side kick to open the second half, but Mission Viejo recovered it, then marched 49 yards in seven plays, taking a 21-0 lead on an eight-yard touchdown reception by tight end Konrad Reuland. A pass-interference penalty on Alvarez was also a key to the drive.

The Jackrabbits scored on their next possession, moving the ball 60 yards in eight plays and scoring on a 24-yard pass from Scott to Terrence Austin with three minutes left in the third quarter. Scott, who completed 16 of 25 passes for 164 yards, completed all five of his passes on the drive.

The Diablos quickly answered as Sanchez found Sean Fitzgerald in the end zone with a 15-yard pass on fourth and goal, giving Mission Viejo a 28-7 lead early in the fourth quarter.

“Our offense played great in the second half,” said Sanchez, who was nine of 19 for 139 yards with no interceptions. “And our defense played great in the second half.”

Cruz Parson, who had been rotating at quarterback with Scott, came in for three plays in the second quarter before injuring his right knee. He did not return.

DeSean Jackson had seven catches for 82 yards and one touchdown, an eight-yarder to make it 28-14 with 7:24 left in the game.

Senior tailback Chris Stevens carried the ball six times for 122 yards and three touchdowns and returned a fumble recovery 95 yards for another touchdown for host Mojave (3-1). L.A. Baptist is 3-1.

Morningside 21, Muir 7
Lafayette Fletcher rushed 29 times for 191 yards and scored on a 65-yard run for visiting Morningside (3-2). Trezone Sterling had 10 tackles, including two tackles for losses and two sacks for Morningside.

Ontario Christian 61, San Dimas 35
Senior Rich Owens rushed for 271 yards and scored on runs of one yard and 33, 80 and 33 yards and also scored on a 64-yard reception for Ontario Christian at San Dimas. Ontario Christian quarterback Lance Cromer completed eight of 19 passes for 218 yards and, in addition to the touchdown pass to Owens, hit Mike Trabbie for an 80-yard score.

Ontario Christian (4-0) lead 27-7 at halftime, before San Dimas closed the gap to 41-35 with 5:22 left in the game, but the Knights scored on three consecutive possessions to close the door.

Malcolm Shirley had two receptions for 100 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown catch, and rushed for a 56-yard score and returned seven kickoffs for 196 yards for San Dimas (3-1).

Rio Hondo Prep 46, St. Anthony 7
Senior tailback Landon Goodwell rushed for 295 yards and five touchdowns to lead visiting Rio Hondo Prep (2-2). St. Anthony is 1-3.

Ike De La Torre ran for the only touchdown for host San Marino (1-3). Rosemead is 4-0.

Joseph Salazar had touchdown runs 53, 3, and 30 yards and Alan De La Cruz caught a 40-yard touchdown pass to lead host Salesian (2-2). Animo is 0-4.

Jon Daniels scored on a 1-yard sneak on overtime, and the Eagles (2-2) held on for the victory.

Michael Henley rushed for 139 yards and one touchdown, Daniel Locke rushed for 113 yards and two touchdowns and Lewis Adeyemi had 16 carries for 79 yards and one touchdown for Santa Monica (2-2) at Santa Monica College.

Jesse Ramirez rushed for 183 yards in 18 carries and scored five touchdowns in 18 carries for host Schurr (3-0).

Senior running back Dashaun Davis rushed for 131 yards and four touchdowns, including a 60-yard scoring run on the first play of the game, for visiting Silverado (3-0-1). Highland is 1-3.

Michael Stimpfel completed 11 of 25 passes for 192 yards and one touchdown for host South Pasadena (3-0-1). John Morent caught a 30-yard scoring pass and Jose Venegas scored on a one-yard run for the only touchdowns in the game.Alhambra is 2-2.

Valencia 37, St. John Bosco 6
With their high-powered offense struggling for much of the game and star quarterback Michael Herrick having an off-night, the Vikings, ranked No. 9 by The Times-turned to their defense to throttle the Braves at St. John Bosco.

Despite failing to score over 40 points for the first time this season, Valencia (4-0) took the lead on its first offensive possession and never trailed. Led by linebackers Torrey O’ Brien, Anthony DeFilippo, and Gary Cox, the Vikings’ quick-blitzing defense limited St. John Bosco to 63 total yards while forcing five turnovers and a safety.

“They’ve been doing some real good things all year long,” Valencia coach Brian Stiman said. “Hopefully, we’ll continue it. I’m very proud of their effort tonight.”

Herrick, who had 960 yards and 12 touchdown passes in his first three games, shook off a slow start to complete 16 of 36 tries for 233 yards. He was intercepted three times but did throw three scoring passes.

Sophomore running back Shane Vereen had a big game with 105 yards and had scoring runs of 10 and four yards in the second half as the Vikings broke open a 7-3 halftime lead with 16 third quarter points.

“We were put in some difficult situations in the first half with some penalties and errors on our part,” Stiman said. “We weren’t exactly sharp. The second half, we played pretty well.”

The Braves (2-2) sacked Herrick three times late in the first half and Domingo Castellanos got the quarterback’s third interception early in the third quarter but St. John Bosco only managed a 42-yard field goal by Andrew Aguila (cq).

Aguila, a six-foot junior, kicked a school record 54-yarder in the second quarter for the Brave’s other points.

Birmingham 33, Newhall Hart 27
Birmingham (2-2) raced to a 26-0 halftime lead, then survived a furious second-half rally by Hart in the upset victory at College of the Canyons in Valencia.

Hart pulled within a touchdown on a five-yard touchdown run by Robbie Casselberry with 2:36 to play. Birmingham recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock. A 16-yard pass play from Andrew Miramontes to Kenny Davis on fourth and six with 1:06 to play sealed the victory.

Miramontes completed 14 of 24 passes for 245 yards and three touchdowns. The Birmingham defense forced six Hart turnovers, giving Hart (2-2) 11 turnovers in its two losses. It is the first time Hart Coach Mike Herrington has lost to a City section team in his 16 years with the Indians.

Hart quarterback Tyler Lyon completed 28 of 54 passes for 368 yards and a touchdown, but also threw three interceptions. Receiver Ryan Wolfe caught 12 passes for 154 yards and Troy Yudin had nine catches for 133 yards and a touchdown.

Birmingham limited Hart to only 47 yards rushing. Birmingham nose tackle Nick Carter left in an ambulance with a broken leg suffered with less than four minutes remaining.

After Gordon tied the score, Alex Maire returned the ensuing kickoff 74 yards to score for La Jolla Country Day (4-1).

Senior running back Brandon Edwards rushed for over 200 yards for the third consecutive week, carrying the ball 26 times for 213 yards and three touchdowns for host Diamond Ranch (2-1-1). Ayala is 2-2.

Paul Zuniga threw for 435 yards and seven touchdowns and intercepted a pass on defense for host Gabrielino (4-0) in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Jonathan Omar caught touchdown passes of 80, 60 and 15 yards for Gabrielino, which led 28-6 at halftime. San Gabriel is 0-3-1.

Sean Smith 13 carries for 56 yards and four catches for 40 yards and Gregory Gates had three receptions for 42 yards in the loss for Blair (2-2).

St. Bonaventure 29, Crespi 27
Crespi’s Sean Conway missed a 34-yard field with 30 seconds to give St. Bonaventure the victory at Ventura High. Matt Lee had 164 yard in 30 carries with three touchdowns for St. Bonaventure, ranked No. 10 by The Times and No. 2 in Div. IV.

Crespi (2-2) had second and goal from the ten with 1:30 left in the game, but Darryl Fields was stopped twice for negative seven yards before Conway came up wide left.

Crespi’s Randle Harris had 165 yards in 25 carries with two touchdowns and also had a 94-yard kickoff return for a score early in the first quarter to give the Celts, ranked No. 3 in Div. X, an early 7-6 lead.

St. Bonaventure kicker Jeremy Licea’s 40-yard field goal with 7:50 left in the fourth rounded out the scoring. St. Bonaventure improved to 4-1.
