Jeramy Knepper caught a 34-yard touchdown pass and Jeff Shakespeare kicked field goals of 25 and 40 yards to lead visiting Brethren Christian (8-1, 2-0) at San Clemente High School. Capistrano Valley Christian dropped to 3-6, 1-1.

Ethan Edwards had an eight-yard touchdown run for Montclair Prep (6-3, 1-1).

Chris Lara scored on a three-yard run to open the fourth quarter and La Salle (8-2, 3-1) held on to defeat Verbum Dei (6-2-1, 2-1), handing Mary Star (4-5, 3-0) a share of the league title in the process. The Eagles play Mary Star next week; La Salle is idle until the playoffs.

Reginald Dunn Jr. intercepted two passes for Verbum Dei, which tied the game at 14-14 in the third quarter when Marquis Bradley completed a 16-yard halfback option pass to Marcus Scroggins. Dunn set up the touchdown with an interception and 74 yards rushing on the ensuing possession.

Shawn Sutherland rushed for 79 yards and three touchdowns in 16 carries to lead host Big Bear (4-5, 3-3) past Desert Hot Springs (4-5, 1-5).

Robertson threw scoring passes of 36, 87, 76 and nine yards, primarily to Zack Duhame and Nate Jones. Duhame had four receptions for 114 yards and one touchdown. Jones made three catches for 131 yards and two scores.

Mercier also had 11 tackles and returned an interception 45 yards. John Grayem led the defensive effort with 13 tackles and one forced fumble. Pena finished with 10 receptions for 185 yards.

Alfredo Castaneda scored on runs of 61, 54, 56 and 30 yards, all in the second quarter, as Bell Gardens (4-5, 3-1) rallied from a 14-0 first-quarter deficit to win the game at Montebello (3-6, 2-2).

Casteneda finished with five touchdowns total, closing with a 19-yard scoring run late in the fourth quarter that held off Montebello after the Oilers had pulled within 38-35 at the end of the third period.

Bell Gardens quarterback Cris Lara had nine carries for 123 yards, including a 69-yard run, and he also threw an 11-yard touchdown pass.

Senior Jesse Ramirez rushed for 191 yards in 31 carries and scored on runs of seven, one, 15 and 31 yards for Schurr (8-1, 4-0) in a victory at Moor Field in Alhambra.Ramirez has 28 rushing touchdowns this season for the Spartans, which clinched a share of the league championship and the league’s top seed for the playoffs. Devin Lopez caught seven passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns for Alhambra (5-4, 2-2).

Peninsula 35, Redondo 33
In a Bay League game filled with big plays at crucial moments, a pair of small ones proved to be the difference as Rolling Hills Estates Peninsula defeated Redondo, Friday at Peninsula.

Erik Lorig blocked a Redondo extra point attempt midway through the third quarter then later teamed with Frank Bivinetto to stop a two-point conversion attempt that would have tied the game at 28-28 with 5 minutes, 33 seconds left to play.

Instead, Peninsula maintained a 28-26 lead, then extended it to 35-26 on its next play from scrimmage when Erik Pederson ran 62 yards up the left sideline for a touchdown.

Redondo (7-2, 3-1) answered on its next drive when Kevin Ellison scored on a 17-yard run to make the score 35-33 with 3:25 to play. Two plays later, Redondo’s Julian Reyes recovered a Peninsula fumble and Redondo took possession at the Peninsula 41 with 2:33 to play.

But on fourth and eight form the Peninsula 39, Redondo tried a long pass and Panther defensive back Uzoma Idah knocked it down just before the goal line to preserve the victory and keep Peninsula (8-0-1, 3-0-1) in line for at least a share of the Bay League title.

Pederson finished with 165 yards and three touchdowns in 12 carries for Peninsula, which had a 21-14 halftime lead and extended it to 28-14 when Theo Nikolakopulos scooped up a fumble and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the second half.

Jordan Tusieseina completed 19 of 20 passes for 285 yards and three touchdowns for Redondo. Leonard Hernandez was his favorite target with 10 receptions for 161 yards and three touchdowns.

Sophomore running back Shane Vereen , emerging as a devastating offensive weapon, caught touchdown passes of 33 and 66 yards and ran for two scores as Valencia (8-1, 4-0), ranked No. 6 in the Southland by The Times, clinched at least a share of its first Foothill League championship with a dominating performance against No. 20 Canyon (8-1, 3-1).

Vereen finished with 152 yards rushing in 22 carries and caught six passes for 131 yards. Quarterback Michael Herrick completed 24 of 34 passes for 374 yards and four touchdowns.

Valencia, looking like the prime challenger to unbeaten Mission Viejo in the upcoming Southern Section Division II playoffs, scored on its first five possessions to open a 35-0 halftime lead. Herrick passed for 290 yards and all four of his touchdowns in the first half.

Linebacker Anthony Defilippo recorded his 14th sack of the season for Valencia, which is seeking its first outright league title since it started playing varsity football in 1996.

Justin Williams scored two touchdowns on one-yard runs for Canyon.

Beverly Hills converted a field goal in the third quarter to pull within 14-10, but Woods went on his 28-yard touchdown run on Santa Monica’s ensuing possession to stretch the lead.

Meyer Linter completed eight of 24 passes for 117 yards and Kevin Rivers completed three of eight passes for 52 yards and one score for Beverly Hills.

Saddleback Valley Christian also had a chance to win in the closing seconds, but had a dropped touchdown pass in the end zone.

Troy Guanzon returned an interception 60 yards for a touchdown with two minutes left in the second quarter for Ribet Academy’s other touchdown, which gave the Fighting Frogs an 8-7 edge before Saddleback Valley Christian scored on a quarterback sneak with three minutes left to take a 13-8 lead.

John Liti had 15 carries for 97 yards and Shaun Gentry scored on a 76-yard end-around and finished with 73 yards in two carries for Foothill. Gentry also had two catches for 14 yards, with a seven-yard scoring reception.

Mike Anderson was 23 of 51 passing for 294 yards with one touchdown and one interception for Woodbridge (4-4-1, 2-2).

El Toro (3-6, 0-4) scored its one touchdown on a receiver pass in the fourth quarter.

Mission Viejo 48, San Clemente 0
The top-ranked Diablos rushed for 248 yards and seven touchdowns in the South Coast League title game against No. 22 San Clemente.

Sophomore running back Keegan Gogerty carried 16 times for 115 yards and a touchdown and junior fullback Chane Moline added 97 yards and three touchdowns in 17 carries.

Mission Viejo (9-0, 4-0) took a 2-0 lead when San Clemente (7-2, 3-1) snapped the ball out of the back of its end zone from its seven-yard line on its first possession of the game.

While its defense held the Tritons to two first downs and 35 total yards in the first half, Mission Viejo followed its running game to a 29-0 halftime lead. Gogerty rushed for 87 yards in the first half and Moline added 86 yards and all of his touchdowns.

Quarterback Mark Sanchez scored on a five-yard run to give the Diablos a 9-0 lead. Sanchez, who has committed to USC, threw the ball only 13 times before leaving the game late in the third quarter, with seven completion for 87 yards.

San Clemente, which had scored 35 points or more in its previous six games, did not cross midfield until 3:11 remained in the third quarter.
