The Ladycats delivered, too, extending their state-record league winning streak to 184 over a span of 19 seasons as it defeated No. 24 Placentia El Dorado, 58-38.

The game hardly resembled their last meeting, which went down to the final minute before Brea pulled out a 49-46 victory. El Dorado (23-3, 8-2) hoped that it had a chance to steal a share of Century League title with an streak-busting victory. The Ladycats did trail early, 7-2, but then scored 24 of the next 30 points.

Brea (21-5, 10-0) had four players score in double digits, with Kim Goeggel and Carrie Noyes scoring 14 apiece, Lauren Pedersen with 13 and Jeanette Pohlen with 11. El Dorado senior Melissa Cook scored 19, same as she had in the first game. However, Cook had a difficult time getting the ball in scoring position as she and her teammates -- who include four sophomores in the rotation -- were denied good looks at the basket by an aggressive Brea defense.

“I think they were a little scared,” El Dorado Coach Wayne Carlson said of his younger players.

Brea forced the tempo, and the faster game played into the hands of guards Pedersen and Thune. Brea committed only four turnovers, none in the first half as they built a 28-19 lead.

“When you get a shot every possession,” Carlson said, “you’ll beat everybody.”
