Championship

Garden Grove Pacifica 1, Thousand Oaks 0
Freshman Noelle Micka led off the game with a single, and a sacrifice bunt later scored on freshman Monica Harrison’s single, to help give No. 2 Garden Grove Pacifica a 1-0 victory over No. 12 Thousand Oaks Saturday in the title game of the Irvine Woodbridge Classic at Col. Bill Barber Park.

Micka’s slap was a line drive into left field. Crystal Vieyra advanced her with a bunt, and then Harrison delivered a run-scoring grounder up the middle against losing pitcher Suzanne Cominski (5-2), who was getting only her second start of the season.

Brittany Weil (17-2) gave up only four hits to Thousand Oaks (15-2), but two came in the seventh inning before getting her ninth strikeout with runners at first and third to end the game.

“Our girls have a confidence level that no matter what the circumstances, they’re going to battle until the end,” said Thousand Oaks Coach Gary Walin. “[Weil] is one of the outstanding pitchers in the state. It’s very difficult to score off her, and you don’t get many chances.”

Micka, one of four freshman starters for Pacifica, said Weil was on her game. “She did very good,” Micka said. “All her pitches were working.”

Pacifica is 21-2 and ranked No. 5 in the nation. Ranked first in the Southland is Corona Santiago, which is ranked no. 4 nationally.

Is Pacifica the best team in Southern California?

“We haven’t lost to anybody from Southern California this year,” Coach Rob Weil said.

Pacifica’s losses came in the Mohave Tournament of Champions in Bullhead City, Ariz. Santiago has lost only once, to Norco.

To win the title for the first time, Pacifica defeated five teams who have been ranked this season, and three that are ranked today: La Puente Bishop Amat, 3-1, in nine innings; No. 15 Valencia, 1-0, in 11 innings; No. 5 Corona, 2-1, in 10 innings; Newhall Hart, 3-1; and No. 11 Thousand Oaks.

“The thing I liked about this tournament is that we played close games and we didn’t panic,” Weil said. “We believe in ourselves and the person next to us. We didn’t collapse.”

Neither did Thousand Oaks, which trailed host Woodbridge going into the bottom of the sixth inning, 3-1. But Melissa Smith homered to make it 3-2, and the Lancers scored twice in the seventh inning.

Amy Pilkington had a bunt single, Kelly Cordeiro doubled home Pilkington to tie the score. Cordeiro took third on a grounder and scored on Chelsea Berthiaume’s ground ball single to center field.

Garden Grove Pacifica 3, Newhall Hart 1
Brittany Weil pitched a one-hitter and struck out seven as second-ranked Garden Grove Pacifica defeated Newhall Hart, 3-1, Friday to advance to today’s championship game of the Irvine Woodbridge tournament.

Harrison also added an RBI, on a run-scoring grounder, in the sixth that scored Noelle Micka, who had opened with a single.

Back-to-back, two-out doubles in the seventh inning by Briana Bernardi and Karina Slauenwhite provided Hart (9-7-1) its only run. Despite its record, Hart had beaten three teams this season that were ranked in the Top 10 in the Southland.

“Their record didn’t indicate how they’ve been playing,” said Rob Weil, Pacifica’s coach. “They’ve lost a lot of close games.” Pacifica will play the winner of today’s noon semifinal between Woodbridge and No. 12 Thousand Oaks at 6 p.m. at Col. Bill Barber Park.
