A fast start led to a top finish for Corona del Mar.

The Sea Kings showed off a veritable fountain of youth as freshmen and sophomores led them to the girls’ championship of the Southern Section Relays for the first time in Coach Doug Volding’s 20-year tenure Saturday night at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

Freshman Stephanie Gabert anchored Corona del Mar’s 4x100 individual medley and 4x50 breaststroke relays as the Sea Kings won those events as well as 6x50 freestyle relay in the first three races of the night.

“I knew they were talented and they were excited, but I didn’t expect that,” Volding said. “I don’t know where to start. It was a total team effort from the first girl to the last.”

Corona del Mar, ranked number two in the Southland by The Times, ran away with the competition from there, scoring a total of 248 points while winning four of seven events overall and finishing out of the top two only in the 4x50 butterfly and 4x50 medley relays.

Villa Park, the defending champion in the meet, placed a distant second with 178 points, followed by Santa Margarita, which used consistency and depth to place third with 160 points despite not finishing among the top three in any event.

Glendora finished fourth with 140 points after winning the final two events, and San Clemente wound up in fifth place with 139 points.

Tyler McClure of Royal won the 200 freestyle in 1:49.56 and the 50 freestyle in 22.69 for Royal (3-0 in league). Teammate Jeremy Sotomeyer won the 200 individual medley in 2:02.79 and the 100 freestyle in 51.25

David Chen won at the 100 butterfly in 54.45 and also the 200 freestyle in 1:52.00 for Claremont. Scott Player won at the 200 individual medley in 2:05.15 and the 100 freestyle in 50.77 for host Ayala (4-1).

Servite 112, Katella 18
Brent Hurley won the 50 freestyle in 22.06, Adam McCall won the 100 freestyle in 49.18 and Justin Pinili won the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.33 to lead host No. 6 Servite (3-0) past Katella.

Kelly Palmberg won the 200 freestyle in 2:12.02 and the 100 freestyle in 1:00.94 for Royal (3-0 in league). Teammate Jenny Modglin won the 100 fly in 1:02.74 and the 100 backstroke in 1:07.60.

Christine Gore won the 200 freestyle in 2:01.52 and won the 500 freestyle in 5:29.00, Justine VandeMortel won the 50 freestyle in 26.64 and won the 100 freestyle in 57.66 and Rachell Nguyen won the 100 backstroke in 1:05.00 and won the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.00 to lead host Rosary (1-2).

Nick Divan won the 200 freestyle in 1:47.02, the 500 freestyle in 4:35.94 and joined Daniel Owens, Scott Sorge and Gregory Goodell to finish the 200 freestyle relay in 1:31.98 for host Mission Viejo (5-1). Owens finished the 100 freestyle in 48.73 seconds and the 100 butterfly in 55.19. Goodell finished the 200 freestyle in 1:49.61, the 100 freestyle in 51.15, and joined Cole Davison, Chad LaTourette and Andrew Godbe to finish the 400 freestyle relay in 3:24.68. LaTourette finished the 200 freestyle in 1:51.12 and the 500 freestyle in 4:50.32. Godbe finished the 200 individual medley in 1:59.87 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.72. Sorge clocked in at 22.55 seconds in the 50 freestyle and at 55.92 seconds in the 100 backstroke. The Mission Viejo 200 medley relay team finished at 1:42.96. Santa Margarita’s Bryce Cullinane finished the 500 freestyle in 4:55.65, and its 200 free relay team timed at 1:35.97.

Brianna Blanchard won the 500-yard freestyle in a Southern Section qualifying-standard time of 5:48.06, and won the 100 breaststroke in 1:23.25 for La Reina in a Fountain League meet at Viewpoint.

Other double winners for the Regents were Veronica Espino, who won the 100 freestyle (59.18) and 200 individual medley (2:19.86) and Laura DeCesare, who won the 100 butterfly (1:06.34) and 100 backstroke (1:09.84).

Lauren Runke won the 50 free in 29.47 seconds. Laura DeCesare posted a Southern Section qualifying time of 57.87 as the first leg of the Regents’ 400 freestyle relay.

Junior Nick Divan won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.89 and the 100 freestyle in 49.02 seconds for Mission Viejo (4-1) and also anchored the winning 200 medley relay team that timed 1:42.40 and swam the second leg on the 200 free relay that won in 1:31:52 in a South Coast League opener at Mission Viejo.

Mission Viejo sophomore Daniel Owens won the 100 butterfly (52.96) and while freshman Chad La Tourette and Andrew Godbe won the 500 free (4:49.93) and 100 breast (1:01.38), respectively.

El Toro’s top swimmer was junior Brandon Pierson, who won the 200 individual medley (1:56.91) and 100 backstroke (53.51).
