At Cerritos College

BOYS

Derrick Jones of Long Beach Poly had a hand in four victories in the Southern Section Masters Meet at Cerritos College on Friday night, but the Jackrabbit senior wasn’t exactly in a celebratory mood afterward.

Jones, a senior, won the 100 in 10.50 seconds, the fastest time in the state this year, and the 200 in a career-best 20.97 to move to fourth on the national list for this year.

He also ran anchor legs on teams that won the 400 relay in 41.24 and the 1,600 relay in 3:13.96, but his mind was on the season-ending hamstring injury that rival Lionel Larry of Compton Dominguez sustained in the 100.

“I felt pretty good coming out of the curve,” Jones said of the 200 race. “I didn’t have my boy Lionel running with me. I was kind of upset at that, but I went out there and ran good anyway. I thought he was going to be able to run in the state meet so we could run a good time there, but unfortunately he got hurt.”

Larry, the defending state champion in the 200, was regarded as the state-title favorite in that event and the 100 after running a career-best 20.73 in the former and a wind-aided 10.37 in the latter in winning the Division II races of the Southern Section championships last Saturday. But he finished ninth -- and last -- in the 100 on Friday after straining his right hamstring midway through the race.

“He seemed fine,” Larry’s father Lionel said when asked how his son was feeling after anchoring Dominguez to a second-place time of 41.85 in the 400 relay. “Everything seemed good when he was warming up [for the 100].”

Senior Marquis Profit of Pasadena Muir, who ran career bests of 14.02 in the 110 high hurdles and 37.11 in the 300 intermediate hurdles, was the only other boy to win two individual events in the meet in which the top five finishers in each event qualified for the state championships in Sacramento on Friday and Saturday, as did any finishers who met an at-large qualifying mark in their events.

Profit’s times make him the second-fastest performer in the state this year in both events.

In other events, senior Michael Haddan of Irvine of Woodbridge won the 800 in a state-leading time of 1:51.50 after surging past junior Josh Castaneda of La Verne Bonita in the final 80 meters and senior Demitri Mosby of Cerritos Gahr won the boys’ long jump with a state-leading mark of 24-6 1/4.

GIRLS

Handicapping the girls’ sprint events in next weekend’s state track and field championships became more difficult during the Southern Section Masters Meet at Cerritos College on Friday night.

That’s because Jasmine Baldwin of La Puente Bishop Amat defeated Shalonda Solomon of Long Beach Poly in both the 100- and 200-meter races to stamp herself as a legitimate state title contender.

Baldwin, a senior who did not run track at the high school level the previous two years while living in a group home in La Verne, upset Solomon in the 100 in the Mission Viejo Trabuco Hills Invitational on April 3 and finished a close second to her in the Arcadia Invitational the following week.

But Solomon, a senior, appeared to be the superior sprinter in the Southern Section divisional championships last Saturday when her winning wind-aided times of 11.35 seconds in the 100 and 22.94 in the 200 in the Division I meet were substantially faster than Baldwin’s victorious times of 11.65 and 23.74 in the Division III competition.

Those impression meant little Friday, however, as Baldwin twice came from behind to defeat Solomon.

“I don’t know what to say,” a beaming Baldwin said after running a wind-aided 11.43 to defeat Solomon by a hundreth of a second in the 100. “I’m just happy.”
Steve Foss, the sprint coach at Bishop Amat and Baldwin’s adoptive father, was not surprised by his daughter’s victory.

“[Jasmine] was in first place for about the first 40 meters,” Foss said. “And then Shalonda edged past her, and then Jasmine came back on her, and then it was just the two of them to the finish. When it’s that close, Jasmine is just very hard to beat.”

Solomon had a better start than Baldwin in the 200, but Baldwin began to cut into Solomon’s lead entering the straightaway, pulled alongside her with about 30 meters left. She pulled ahead by inches at the finish to clock a nation-leading time of 23.15 that gave her a victory margin of two-hundreths of a second. The time is ninth on the all-time state list and seventh in section history.

Senior Gayle Hunter of Riverside North, who spanned 20 feet 3 1/2 inches in the long jump and a wind-aided 40-11 3/4 in the triple jump, was the only other girl to win two individual events in the meet, which qualifies the top five finishers in each event to the state championships and any other finishers making an at-large qualifying standard.
