Temecula Valley 45, Laguna Hills 16
Temecula Valley came from behind to defeat Laguna Hills, 45-16, in the championship match as the Golden Bears captured their third Southern Section Division I dual-meet title in four years Saturday at Brea Olinda High.

Temecula Valley (13-1, 4-0 in the Southwestern League) went 4-0 on the day, handing the Hawks their first dual-meet loss of the season behind Calvin Devault and David Navarette.

Devault posted a 4-0 record with four pins at 164 pounds and Navarette went 3-0 with three pins at 107 pounds.

“To win the duals - especially the Division I duals, the power duals - it means a lot,” said Temecula Valley Coach Arnold Alpert. “To be the best dual-meet team around really says a lot about your program.”

Temecula Valley proved its mettle down the stretch against Laguna Hills, which opened a 9-0 lead when Tommy Roberts won an 8-1 decision over Golden Bears’ Chris Branuelos at 193 pounds and Travis Bengard (219) pinned Andrew Herrera in 1 minute 30 seconds.

The Golden Bears, however, began to rebound when heavyweight Jordan Blanchard defeated Laguna Hills’ Blake Fitzgerald, 5-1, and Navarette pinned Anthony Frank to tie the score at 9-9.

Temecula Valley won 10 of the remaining 12 matches to complete the comeback.

Before meeting the Hawks in the final, Temecula Valley defeated Saddleback, 66-12, beat San Clemente, 53-24, and edged Atascadero, 39-32, in other matches.

“That is one heck of a team,” Laguna Coach Cliff Jarmie said. “Give Temecula all the credit. I’m really impressed with them.”
