Two people died early Sunday after their car crashed through a guardrail on the eastbound 118 Freeway in Chatsworth and landed upside down in a riverbed, authorities said.
The single-vehicle crash occurred shortly after midnight near the DeSoto Avenue off-ramp, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The male driver of the 2008 Mercedes “made an unsafe turning movement” and drove through the guardrail then through a perimeter chain-link fence before landing on its roof, the CHP said in a news release. Officers noted that it was windy at the time of the crash.
The driver and a female passenger were the only people in the car, and both died at the scene, authorities said.
A dog in the vehicle survived the crash and was taken by animal control officers to a shelter, according to a CHP incident log.
The identities of the car’s occupants were unknown Sunday, authorities said. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
