Northbound 405 to close for four hours early Sunday morning
It’s not quite Carmageddon, but the closure of the northbound 405 Freeway through the Sepulveda Pass for four hours may cause a few headaches for drivers early Sunday morning.
Coupled with the closure of Coldwater Canyon Avenue for a month, Mondays through Saturdays, many drivers crossing from the Westside to the San Fernando Valley will be mapping out alternate routes.
The northbound 405 will close for about four miles between Getty Center Drive and the 101 Freeway from 1 a.m. until about 6 a.m. Sunday.
As early as 7 p.m. Saturday, ramps within the four-mile construction zone will begin to close, with some lanes closing as early as 11 p.m. Traffic will be diverted to Sepulveda Boulevard.
During the closure, workers will prepare supporting structures for the reconstruction of the Mulholland Drive bridge. A similar closure took place on the southbound 405 on March 8.
The weekend construction is part of a $1-billion project that will add a carpool lane and widen lanes on a section of the 405 that is notorious for traffic jams. The so-called Carmageddons I and II involved total shutdowns of the freeway while the old Mulholland bridge was demolished.
The Coldwater Canyon Avenue closure began Saturday at 8:30 a.m. between Ventura Boulevard and Mulholland Drive. The road reopens at 6 p.m. with one lane in each direction, remaining open on Sunday, then closing again Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. The construction, which is necessary to replace an aging water pipe, ends April 26.
