What a trip: Acid spill after big-rig crash closes Santa Clarita road
A big rig overturned on California 126 in Santa Clarita on Tuesday morning, causing dozens of gallons of acid to spill out onto the freeway.
The highway was closed in both directions as crews tried to sop up the spill.
The crash occurred about 8:40 a.m. between Vanderbilt Way and Commerce Center Drive next to the 5 Freeway north of Magic Mountain, authorities said. The big rig was carrying clay acid, which is used to treat soil. Between 50 and 75 gallons of the liquid spilled onto the road, Los Angeles County fire officials said.
Crews were en route by 9:30 a.m. to pour sand on the acid to start the cleanup.
The crash forced the California Highway Patrol to shut down the highway and its transitions with the 5 Freeway. CHP officials said it was unclear when the road would reopen.
There were no injuries reported.
