Crews battle 800-acre wildfire in Napa County; 100 homes evacuated

A growing wildfire in northern Napa County has burned 800 acres, prompting mandatory evacuation orders for nearly 100 homes, officials said Tuesday.

The Butts fire started just after noon and quickly spread, burning up rugged and dry terrain off Butts Canyon Road in Pope Valley, said Daniel Berlant, spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

It was 10% contained Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

Residents in the Berryessa Estates and along Butts Canyon Road were ordered to evacuate as the rural wildfire burned near homes.

At least 100 firefighters, six air tankers and three helicopters were called to battled the blaze.

The dry weather conditions came six to eight weeks earlier than expected, raising fears over the potential for larger fires during the Fourth of July weekend, Berlant said.
