Chile earthquake: No tsunami threat to California, officials say
A 7.8-magnitude earthquake was reported Wednesday evening off the northern coast of Chile, but the temblor did not pose a tsunami threat to California or other areas along the U.S. Pacific Coast, officials said.
Officials said the quake was an aftershock to an 8.2-magnitude temblor Tuesday left at least five people dead, caused landslides and churned up small tsunami waves that hit California’s coast.
On Wednesday night, officials with the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a “destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii.”
Tsunami warnings were issued for Chile and Peru.
The earthquake was reported about 7:43 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. The temblor was located about 14 miles south of Iquique, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Earlier Wednesday, “one-foot tide fluctuations” occurred in the Santa Barbara harbor around 7:45 a.m., said Kathy Hoxsie, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard. No damage to boats was reported.
