Suspect in fatal Encino hit-and-run surrenders to police
A 26-year-old man was arrested Monday after turning himself in to police in connection with a fatal hit-and-run in Encino earlier in the day.
Grant Valentine was booked on suspicion of felony hit-and-run after surrendering to police at about 4 p.m., LAPD Det. Bill Bustos told KTLA.
The victim, described as a man in his 50s, was struck by a black Cadillac Escalade at about 12:15 a.m. near the intersection of Ventura Boulevard and Gaviota Avenue, according to the police. The man was not in a crosswalk and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver fled the scene, police said, but authorities were able to issue a partial license plate number based on witness descriptions. The SUV’s right front end and headlamp were also damaged in the collision, police said.
“It is the responsibility of the driver or -- anyone involved in a traffic collision -- to stop,” Bustos told KTLA. “Unfortunately, this pedestrian was walking outside the unmarked crosswalk when he was hit. We don’t know why he was doing that, but the driver should have stopped.”
Valentine was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
