Third-place primary finishers endorse in L.A. city attorney race
Third-place primary finishers have been a hot commodity as the two remaining candidates for Los Angeles city attorney duke it out before the May 21 general election.
Private attorney Greg Smith failed to make the runoff but has racked up a successful record suing Los Angeles and other local governments by representing police officers and firefighters in discrimination and whistle-blower cases. Last week, Smith endorsed former lawmaker Mike Feuer, who is challenging City Atty. Carmen Trutanich for the post.
“The stakes are too high for me to continue to sit on the sidelines,” Smith said in a statement issued by the Feuer campaign. “I’m very confident Mike Feuer has the legal and leadership skills to make a great city attorney,” he added.
On Wednesday, former mayoral candidate Kevin James gave his support to Trutanich.
James, the only Republican in the crowded mayoral primary, finished a strong third, behind City Councilman Eric Garcetti and City Controller Wendy Greuel. The attorney and former radio talk show host ran as an outsider and blamed the current office-holders for the city’s deep financial troubles.
“The Trutanich campaign is extremely pleased to welcome Kevin’s support,” said Trutanich chief strategist Rick Taylor, citing James’ “strong ideas and tremendous energy.”
