A man who allegedly threw rocks at residents after they discovered him in their yard was shot dead by Los Angeles police in North Hollywood late Saturday night.

The man was armed with at least one knife and did not obey commands from police officers even after they shot beanbags at him, said Officer Drake Madison of the Los Angeles Police Department.

When he charged at them, the officers switched to lethal force, Madison said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

At around 11:25 p.m., residents arrived at their home in the 11600 block of Stagg Street to find a stranger in their front yard. He began throwing rocks at them, Madison said, prompting them to call police.

The incident will be investigated by the LAPD’s Force Investigation Division, Madison said.
