Monterey Park police officers shot and wounded a man Wednesday morning while serving a warrant in connection with the shooting of a U.S. Marine outside a 7-Eleven store earlier this week, officials said.

The attempted murder suspect was taken to an area hospital, Monterey Park police Lt. Carrie Mazelin said. His condition was not immediately known.

The shooting occurred about 9:20 a.m. near Fourth Street and Woods Avenue in East Los Angeles, where Monterey Park police had been serving a warrant in the attempted murder, she said.

It is unclear what caused the officers to shoot the suspect. No officers were injured.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will be investigating the officer shooting, she said.

The man who was shot was wanted in connection with the shooting of a Marine about 2:45 a.m. Monday in the 200 block of West Pomona Boulevard, she said. An argument erupted among the Marine, a friend and the suspect.

The fight escalated when the suspect pulled out a handgun and shot the Marine, police said. The suspected gunman fled the area after the shooting.
