San Diego police kill suspected gas station robber
San Diego police shot and killed a suspected gas station robber who had fled into a residential neighborhood, taken hostages and attempted to escape in a stolen car, authorities said.
Two nearby schools were locked down for two hours, officials said.
The incident began when a man, described as being in his 30s, robbed a gas station at gunpoint Friday morning and fled into the Bay Terraces neighborhood.
He broke into a home, shot the homeowner in the foot and ran to an adjacent home. In that home, he took a woman hostage, police said. When she managed to get away, the suspect tried to escape in a car that was in the garage.
Several officers opened fire as the suspect backed out of the driveway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police had previously attempted to subdue the suspect with rubber bullets as he ran from house to house. No officers were injured.
