Letters: Contraception isn’t just birth control

Re “The pope, the pill and the court,” Opinion, Jan. 30

Here’s more on the pill and health benefits that the Catholic Church fails to take into account. In 1998, Dr. Jo T. Von Winter and Dr. Matthew Bernard wrote in the journal American Family Physician:

“Estrogen supplementation in the form of low-dose oral contraceptive pills taken during the perimenopausal years may not be appropriate in everyone, but in many women it can ease the emotional and physical transition into the menopausal years, while at the same time providing some of the noncontraceptive benefits of hormonal contraceptives.”

Continuing to teach against contraception flies in the face of medical research. Catholic women, including nuns, experience perimenopausal and menopausal years.

Sadly, the rules of the church are made by men who ignore women’s health and potential benefits, as pointed out by Malcolm Potts and many medical professionals.
