Letters: Santa Monica’s airport isn’t the problem
Re “Santa Monica’s airport lawsuit tossed,” Feb. 16
Activists who complain about air pollution caused by traffic at Santa Monica’s airport overlook the nearby 10 Freeway and 405 Freeway interchange, one of the most congested in the country.
Diesel trucks idling directly upwind from Mar Vista cause the type of pollution the airport is accused of causing. Not surprisingly, the “Carmaggeddon” freeway closures caused immediate air-quality improvements. Closing the airport would do little to solve this problem while destroying a valuable public asset.
The looming pilot shortage due to new regulations is another reason attempts to close the airport are shortsighted. Major airlines recently announced cuts due to the crisis. Flight schools at regional airports like Santa Monica play a vital role in addressing the issue.
