Readers React: Islamic State atrocities aren’t the world’s only injustices

To the editor: In reporting on President Obama’s interview on “60 Minutes,” you omitted the most important part. (“U.S. misjudged rise of Islamic State militants, Obama acknowledges,” Sept. 28)

In response to the question of why the United States always leads responses to international crises, Obama replied that since we are the mightiest country with the strongest, most modern military, the U.S. has the obligation to lead.

Obama’s argument is fallacious and hypocritical.

It’s fallacious because the one who has the most to lose should lead. In the case of Islamic State, it’s Saudi Arabia and Iran, since if Islamic State is left unchecked, they may lose their countries.

It is hypocritical because more horrendous acts are routinely committed in Africa than by Islamic State, including the killings and kidnappings of innocent people and the selling of young women into sex slavery. Yet we do not intervene.
