Breakers the league’s best

It was a clean sweep Wednesday for the Laguna Beach High swimming program which won four Orange Coast League championships on two levels.

The varsity boys’ and girls’ teams and junior varsity boys’ and girls’ teams won titles at Costa Mesa High. The varsity teams compete next week at the CIF Southern Section Swimming and Diving Championships at Riverside City College.

The Laguna varsity teams established three new league records, Coach Beth Weber said. Kasey Karkosa set an individual record in the girls’ 200-yard individual medley (2-minutes 07.08 seconds). The other two records went to the to the varsity girls’ 400 freestyle relay team of Karkosa, Keira Dailey, Claire Sonne and Harper Dix (3:38.36) — which also was a school record, and the boys’ 400 relay team of Camden Benson, Max Morgan, Billy Renner and Cameron Karkosa (3:14.51).

Kasey Karkosa also set a new school record in the girls’ 100 breaststroke (1:09.00).

The CIF-SS Division 2 Diving Championships are Monday at the Riverside Aquatics Complex. The CIF-SS Division 2 Swimming Championships start with divisional prelims May 13 followed by divisional finals May 14 at RCC.

Boys’ Golf

Three Breakers, senior Max Brown, sophomore Kyle Sharp and sophomore Dante Fornaro, clinched spots in the upcoming CIF Southern Division Individual Regional after they finished among the top four at the Orange Coast League finals Wednesday at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach.

The trio shot a two-day total of 162. The league tournament began Tuesday.

“I couldn’t be prouder of these boys as they battled for two days to earn these prestigious spots to play against the best golfers in Orange County,” Laguna Coach Scott Finn said.

Brown, Sharp and Fornaro will compete at 1 p.m. Monday in the CIF Southern Individual Regional on the same Skylinks course.

Other Breakers making all-league at the tournament were sophomore Chase Gioffredi (first-team), sophomore Adam Mundy (second-team), senior Will Uzelac (second-team), and sophomore Dante Madrigal (second-team).

The OCL tournament results:

First Team: Pierson Baird (Calvary Chapel, two-day total 155); Max Brown (Laguna Beach, 162); Kyle Sharp (Laguna Beach, 162); Dante Fornaro (Laguna Beach, 162); Chase Gioffredi (Laguna Beach, 165); Chase Nelson (Calvary Chapel, 165).

Second Team: Dalton Manchester (Estancia, 169); Adam Mundy (Laguna Beach, 172); Will Uzelac (Laguna Beach, 173); Conner Gray (Estancia, 179); Dante Madrigal (Laguna Beach, 179); Jimmy Solano (Costa Mesa, 183); Lliam Wallington (Estancia, 184).

The Breakers, champions of the Orange Coast League, will be the league representative in the CIF-SS Southern Team Divisional playoffs May 16 (8 a.m.) at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley.

Boys’ Volleyball

The defending league champion Breakers put the finishing touches on an undefeated (10-0) title repeat Tuesday by sweeping host Saddleback, 25-15, 25-15, 25-16. They’ll take a 78-match league winning streak into next season.

Sophomore outside hitter Josh McManus had 10 kills and eight digs and senior setter Isaac Wulff 23 assists in the win.

In a matchup Monday between teams ranked in the CIF-SS Division 2 top 10, the second-ranked Breakers hosted Lakewood Monday in a nonleague match and swept the ninth-ranked Lancers, 25-19, 25-14, 25-16. Junior outside hitter Pete Obradovich had 11 kills and six digs and Wulff 30 assists.

The Breakers closed out their regular season Wednesday with a nonleague road match at Dana Hills, and the host Dolphins won in four sets, 25-23, 18-25, 25-20, 25-18. Obradovich had 12 kills and eight digs, sophomore opposite Sam Burgi eight kills and five digs, McManus seven kills and five digs, and Wulff 42 assists.

The CIF-SS boys’ volleyball division pairings will be released Friday. The Breakers, who reached the Division 2 semifinals round last year, will host a first-round match at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The Breakers head into the postseason 17-7 overall, and are ranked second behind defending Division 2 champion Oak Park.

The boys’ volleyball program will host its 33rd annual Alumni Game Friday at Dugger Gym. Former players and fans are urged to attend as the program celebrates 45 years of volleyball. The junior varsity/frosh-soph preliminary match starts at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by the varsity match at 6:30 p.m.

The Laguna Beach courts were the host site this week for the Orange Coast League finals tournament. Results from the final day of the competition Thursday weren’t available at press time.

On the opening day of the tournament Wednesday, every Breaker received a first-round bye, and each won his second-round match to advance to Thursday’s semifinals round.

Second-round singles scores for the Breakers: Ryan Gee (6-0, 6-0), Charles Keller (6-0, 6-1), Tristan Krogius (6-1, 6-1).

Second-round doubles scores for the Breakers: Ethan Gee/Hayden Seitz (6-0, 6-0), Mason Lebby/Taylor Sokolovich (6-0, 4-6, 10-3), Blake Hawkins/Jake Pietig (6-2, 6-3).

“We dominated the first day of play, as we did during the regular season, and so it’s not surprising that everyone advanced to the semifinals,” Laguna Coach Don Davis said.

The Breakers, ranked No. 2 in CIF-SS Division 4, closed out league play April 28 against Costa Mesa and scored a 17-1 win over the Mustangs to finish an 8-0 league season and sew up another league championship.

Sweeping for the Breakers were No. 1 singles Ryan Gee (6-0, 6-1, 6-0) and No. 2 Sterling Bowen (6-0, 6-2, 6-0), and the doubles teams of No. 1 Hayden Seitz/Ethan Gee, No. 2 Mason Lebby/Taylor Sokolovich, and No. 3 Jake Pietig/Taylor Tran, each won by 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 sweeps.

In a nonleague match Tuesday against St. Margaret’s, Ryan Gee (6-1, 6-0, 6-0) and No. 3 Tristan Krogius (6-1, 6-0, 6-0) swept in singles, and Seitz/Pietig swept (6-0, 6-2, 6-4) at No. 3 doubles, in the Breakers’ 16-2 win.

The CIF-SS Division 4 playoff pairings will be announced Monday. The Breakers, runner-up last year to the division title, will play a 2 p.m. first-round game Wednesday. They are ranked second in the division behind defending champion Redlands.

The Breakers are 16-3 entering the playoffs.

“We’ve worked hard to prepare as we have three newcomers playing in the nine-man starting lineup, and so I feel confident that we’ll do well,” Davis said.

Track and Field

The Breakers hosted the Orange Coast League finals Thursday. Results from the finals meet weren’t available at press time.

The Breakers next week will compete at the CIF-SS Track and Field Championships Division 4 prelims meet May 14 at Carpinteria High. The division finals are May 21 at Cerritos College in Norwalk.

Girls’ Sand Volleyball

The Breakers tied for the regular season championship with Saddleback Valley Christian in the South Coast Division of the Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League. The Breakers finished 5-1 in league play and 9-1 overall.

The Breakers are the No. 6 seed for the league’s postseason tournament and will take on Santa Monica Pacifica Christian (6-4 overall, No. 3 team from Westside Division) in a first-round match at 5 p.m. Monday in Huntington Beach.
