NJB seventh-graders take title at Halloween tournament

Laguna Beach Breakers seventh-grade National Junior Basketball All-Net team won its division championship at the G12 Halloween Hoopsfest Tournament last weekend at the Saddleback Valley Sports Center in Lake Forest.

Laguna went 4-0 in the tournament and the Breakers’ final victory was a 51-42 win over the Irvine Flight in the division’s championship game.

The Laguna Beach Breakers are: Willie Rounaghi, Ryan Anthony, Nolan Naess, Gavin Trevino, Jack Payne, Matt Berk, Will Compton, Arthur Rounaghi, and Paxton Burzell. The Breakers are coached by Coby Naess, John Trevino and Arash Rounaghi.

Surfing

A year ago, the Thurston Middle School surf team turned in its best season to date which finished with a No. 2 national ranking.

Thurston lost several of that team’s veteran surfers to the high school level and began its 2015-16 season Oct. 18 in the Scholastic Surf Series (Middle School division) at Church Beach in San Onofre State Park.

Six middle schools compete in the Orange County division of the series. Each school team is comprised of nine boys’ short boarders, three boys’ long boarders, three girls’ short boarders, two girls’ long boarders, and two body boarders. Surfers compete individually and each team’s final score is the combined individual score from each team member.

Despite some discrepancies regarding the contest boundaries, which disqualified some critical waves for some of Laguna’s top surfers, Thurston had a second-place team finish with nine surfers making the finals in their division. Grace Fink of Thurston won the Girls’ Shortboard division with teammate Tess Booth placing second.

Boys’ Bodyboard: Andrew Shutts, fifth; Spencer Collins, sixth.
