Almiranez drops 24 to lead Ocean View to win

Ocean View returned home Saturday from a trip north to open its Hawk Holiday Classic Monday and the Seahawks showed no signs of wear from its long adventure by handling Trabuco Hills, 58-38, in pool play action.

Senior guard Danelle Almiranez scored a game-high 24 points, junior point guard Jackie Moss had 13 points and five assists, and senior center Madisyn Newberry hauled in nine rebounds for the Seahawks.

“On the heels of our trek to central California and coming up short in some close games, it was a relief to come home and play well against a tough team,” Ocean View Coach Kim Morris said.

Ocean View was coming off an appearance at the Atascadero Ruth Doser Classic where the Seahawks went 1-2. In their final game, the lost to Paso Robles, 33-31, on a last-second layup. Almiranez again led the scoring with 15 points, and Moss had 11 rebounds.

The Seahawks also lost to Mission Prep (41-36) but defeated host Atascadero (41-37).

The Hawk Holiday Classic continues daily through Saturday.

Fountain Valley is host to the BK Classic and the Barons played their first pool play game Monday, took a three-point halftime lead on Lakewood but was upended by the Lancers, 48-31. Junior Emily White led the Barons (0-6) with 15 points, two rebounds and three steals.

“Our team played an inspired first half,” Barons Coach Barry Migliornini said. “We are excited about the prospects of putting four quarters together.

Also at the BK Classic, Huntington Beach played Santa Margarita in a pool play matchup Monday and edged the Eagles, 40-39. Samantha Gray had 16 points, two rebounds and two steals, and Kaylyn Nakaji had 13 points, four rebounds, two assists and three steals for the Oilers.

The BK Classic continues daily through Saturday culminating with the tournament’s championship game.

Edison opened its season last week at the Redondo Union Battle at the Beach tournament and went 1-3 overall.

The Chargers’ win came against Los Angeles Crenshaw, 49-23. Senior forward Jackie Bento led the scoring with 15 points, and senior shooting guards Jenny Kwok and shooting guard Justine Modde both scored 10 points for the Chargers.

Bento, who scored 23 points in a 76-57 tournament loss Dec. 2 to Torrance Bishop Montgomery, was named to the all-tournament team.

The Chargers are back in action Dec. 19 when they face San Luis Obispo at the Santa Barbara Tournament.

Marina posted a 2-2 overall record at the Downey Tournament last week. The Vikings defeated Downey St. Pius/St. Matthias (59-24) and San Pedro (51-46, overtime) and lost to Los Angeles Westchester (50-34) and California Academy of Mathematics and Sciences (44-39).

Brethren Christian won its season opener Dec. 2, defeating Irvine Tarbut V’Torah, 28-14. Sophomore forward/center Kayla Trautman scored 10 points and senior guard/forward Sierra Whitmire added nine points of the Warriors.

BC started play Monday at the La Verne Calvary Baptist Tournament and lost 47-28 to Anaheim Cornelia Connelly.
