Morrisey named Co-MVP

Sean Morrissey of Huntington Beach High and Cole Pender of Newport Harbor, who helped guide their respective teams to a share of a league championships, have been named the Most Valuable Players and head the 2016 Sunset League Boys’ Volleyball Team.

Morrissey, a senior who is signed with USC, was Huntington’s leader in kills with 286 for the season. He, along with senior teammates Eric Beatty (Stanford) and Shane Holdaway (BYU) were named first-team on the American Volleyball Coaches Assn. High School Senior All-America Team for boys’ volleyball.

It’s the second year in a row the Huntington program has had three players named first-team All-American. Last year, TJ DeFalco, Josh Tuaniga and Ben Vaught earned the honor.

The Huntington program has had a player named MVP of the Sunset League for the last five years, Huntington Coach Craig Pazanti said.

“This is a well deserved honor for Sean,” Pazanti said of the senior’s Sunset MVP award. “He has been a steady part of this team for the past three years, and for him have a great senior year the way he did, was great to see.”

In the Golden West league, four Ocean View athletes from Ocean View have received all-league honors.
