Since 2011, Santa Ana Mater Dei hasn’t been able to figure out how to topple the dynamic duo in high school football — Corona Centennial and Bellflower St. John Bosco.

The Monarchs are 0-6 vs. St. John Bosco and 1-3 vs. Centennial, the two schools that have dominated the Pac-5 playoff division. Now it’s Division 1 under a new playoff format, and Mater Dei appears to have the personnel to make a run.

The Monarchs are ranked No. 1 in The Times’ preseason top 25 rankings, aided by no less than 10 players who have received college scholarship offers. There’s depth throughout their lineup except on the offensive and defensive lines. If they can stay healthy in the trenches, veteran Coach Bruce Rollinson likes what he sees.

“I like the way they’ve jelled together,” he said.

St. John Bosco, led by powerful offensive and defensive lines, is No. 2 and Centennial, the two-time defending Pac-5 champion, is No. 3. Mission Viejo, with a 28-game win streak, is No. 4.

Here is a look at the high school football preseason top 25, as chosen by Eric Sondheimer:
