Baseball: It’s No. 1 vs. No. 2 this week in three-game Trinity League series
The matchup this week in the Trinity League between No. 1-ranked Orange Lutheran (16-3, 5-1) and No. 2 JSerra (16-6, 5-2) in a three-game baseball series should receive lots of attention, because it’s similar to the format what high school baseball coaches have wanted to decide the Southern Section championship.
A move to change the current single-elimination playoff format was rejected several years ago, but this series matching No. 1 vs. No. 2 is similar to what a potential championship matchup would look like as envisioned by lots of coaches.
The first game is Tuesday night at Hart Park in Orange, followed by Wednesday night at JSerra and then Friday night back at Hart Park.
Both head coaches still have to decide their starting rotations and in particular, when will JSerra use ace Collin Quinn and ditto for Orange Lutheran’s Chris Burica.
“Of course we’re excited,” JSerra Coach Brett Kay said. “But we have six games after this.”
Whichever team wins two out of three will have a tiebreaker edge come seeding time.
There’s going to be some great baseball matchups this week.
In the Mission League, Chaminade is playing Sherman Oaks Notre Dame in a three-game series. On Friday, that means likely first-round draft pick Blake Rutherford of Chaminade will get to see the 96 mph fastball of Notre Dame’s Hunter Greene, causing a stampede of scouts to show up.
In the Pacific League, Crescenta Valley is set to play at Burroughs on Tuesday and host the Indians at Stengel Field on Friday in a battle for first place.
In the Valley Mission League, Kennedy and San Fernando are set to renew their rivalry with games on Tuesday at San Fernando and Thursday at Kennedy. Jerry Aguilar is hitting better than .400 for Kennedy.
In the Palomares League, first place will be on the line when Bonita hosts South Hills on Wednesday and plays at South Hills on Friday.
