Basketball: Transfers become eligible on Monday

Share

Monday is freedom day for winter transfer athletes who have been sitting out the past month of the season, and there’s going to be some big-time impact players in basketball.

Brayden Lenius, who moved to West Hills Chaminade from Canada, becomes eligible. He already showed the type of athlete he is in football, emerging as a college prospect at receiver in helping the Eagles win the CIF state championship Division II bowl game.

He can jump and dunk with the best, and adding athleticism to the Eagles lineup will only help a team that has four transfer students on its roster. He’ll make his debut in the Mission League on Friday against Loyola, the only team to beat the Eagles this season.

Etiwanda, already a strong team, adds 6-foot-9 transfer Jordan Naughton from Rancho Cucamonga. Coach Dave Kleckner said Naughton has been making steady improvement in practice and figures to be a major contributor as a rebounder and shot blocker.

Village Christian adds Alemany transfer Bear Henderson, who was a key player at Alemany the last two seasons. He’ll join another Alemany transfer, Bennie Boatwright, who has played the first month for the Crusaders (9-1. Village Christian is still awaiting the return of Bryan Alberts, who hasn’t played because of an injury.

In girls’ basketball, Long Beach Poly, whose only loss has been to Santa Ana Mater Dei, is adding two 6-2 players who transferred from Playa del Rey St. Bernard _ Lahjanna Drummer and Michigan-bound Emoni Jackson. Their addition could send Poly past Mater Dei and L.A. Windward when playoff action begins.
