Boys’ basketball: Donald Gipson leads Fairfax past Centennial in San Diego

Donald Gipson is definitely back for Fairfax High. Gipson, an All-City guard who had knee surgery last spring, received MVP honors on Wednesday night in helping the Lions win their division in the Under Armour Holiday Classic with a 68-53 victory over Corona Centennial.

Gipson and freshman Ethan Anderson each scored 12 points for the Lions (12-1).

Other results from San Diego: Brentwood defeated St. Monica, 45-42. Nick Medavoy had 24 points and 10 rebounds. Kyle Small had 24 points for Mayfair in 62-58 win over Morse. Great Oak defeated Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, 59-49. Chibueze Jacobs had 34 points for Notre Dame.

In the D1 Bound tournament, unbeaten Bishop Montgomery rolled to a 73-38 victory over Calabasas in the championship game.

Other results: West Ranch won the third-place game with a 71-67 win over Cathedral. Austin Galuppo scored 33 points for West Ranch. Westchester defeated Dorsey, 65-51. Maranatha defeated Loyola, 53-44. Inglewood defeated Narbonne, 49-47.

Venice defeated Keppel, 53-50. Dominguez defeated San Marcos, 71-64. Sun Valley Poly defeated Sylmar, 74-73. South Pasadena defeated Moreno Valley, 47-39. SOCES defeated Malibu, 66-61. Crossroads defeated Verdugo Hills, 61-42. Price defeated Granada Hills, 65-58. La Canada defeated Highland, 66-48. Renaissance defeated Bernstein, 60-46.

Chaminade rallied to win its tournament championship with a 51-50 win over Taft. Josh Hauser had the game-winning basket and finished with 22 points. He was named tournament MVP. Other results from Chaminade: Kennedy defeated Reseda, 47-33. Marshall defeated Menlo, 55-51. Chester Rodriguez of Marshall made all-tournament. Moorpark defeated Lancaster, 60-49. Dawson Legum made all-tournament.

In the MaxPreps tournament, No. 1-ranked Chino Hills stayed unbeaten with its 13th consecutive victory, defeating Redondo, 96-80, in the championship game. Redondo hung tough, trailing only, 70-63, after three quarters. Lonzo Ball scored 33 points.

Viewpoint defeated King, 73-49. Christian Juzang scored 22 ponts an Aram Arslanian added 21 points and eight rebounds. Mission Viejo defeated Benicia, 61-30. Arthur Weimholt made all-tournament.

St. John Bosco (13-1) won its division championship with a 57-50 win over Harvard-Westlake.
JJ Watson scored 32 points. Freshman Makani Whiteside had eight assists. Simi Valley defeated Las Vegas Sierra Vista, 68-61. Kaden Young scored 32 points, including eight threes.
Damien won its division championship with a 74-60 win over Villa Park. Bryce Peters earned MVP honors with 32 points.

Jonah Mathews scored 21 points in Santa Monica’s 53-43 win over Mercer Island in the division championship game. Mathews was MVP. Alemany lost to De La Salle, 56-47. DJ McDonald and Brandon Davis each scored 14 points.

Eastvale Roosevelt knocked off Los Alamitos, 64-37. Matt Mitchell scored 18 points. Oak Park defeated Misision Prep, 56-39. Sophomore Riley Battin had 28 points and 16 rebounds. He finished with a 27.5 scoring average in the tournament. Heritage Christian defeated Oakland, 58-51.

In South Carolina, Santa Ana Mater Dei (13-1) defeated Florida Bartow, 62-53. Justice Sueing scored 17 points. Spencer Freedman, who won the tournament’s three-point shooting contest, had 14 points.

At Modesto Christian, Brandon Russell scored 19 points, but El Camino Real (5-7) was beaten by Manteca, 66-63.

In the Lakewood tournament, JSerra improved to 10-2 with a 62-55 win over Burbank. Alec Hickman scored 23 points.

In the Orange Holiday Classic, Foothill (11-3) won the championship with a 47-46 win over Esperanza. Lucas Araujo was tournament MVP. He scored 19 points, including four three throws in the final minute. Kezie Okpala had 26 for Esperanza.

Servite defeated Saddleback Valley Christian, 67-48. Cameron Griffin scored 23 points and Pearson Parker 18. Tesoro defeated Anaheim Canyon, 54-49. Devon Modster scored 13 points.

In the Santa Barbara tournament, Royal defeated Flintridge Prep, 55-48. Nick Feathers led Royal with 16 points.

Paraclete won the Wasco touranment with a 50-32 win over Coalinga.

In the Hart tournament, Cleveland defeated Righetti, 78-65. Wayne Currie had 30 points.

In Chicago, Crespi won the tournament championship with a 50-41 win over Homewood-Flossmoor. De’Anthony Melton was named tournament MVP with 22 points. Brandon Williams added 13 points.

In the Covina tournament, Walnut won the championship with a 71-46 win over Los Altos. Dwight Ramos scored 32 points.

Ayala lost to San Mateo Serra, 63-47, in the Marin Catholic tournament. In Arizona, Orange Lutheran won, 69-64, over Mountain View. KaVaughn Scott scored 17 points.
