Football: Garfield vs. Banning is important City Section game

Week 1 of the high school football season in the City Section could become important in Week 11 when playoff seedings are decided in Division 1.

That’s because Thursday’s game between Eastern League power Garfield and Marine League representative Banning matches two teams with ambitions of being part of the group of teams trying to challenge title favorite Narbonne.

Garfield was competitive with Alemany last week in the first half, trailing, 21-12, before falling, 42-12.

Junior quarterback Henry Polanco completed 15 of 22 passes for 164 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore running back Brandyn Jordan gained 80 yards.

Banning defeated North Torrance, 19-12, on a late TD pass from Myles Porter. The pilons are led by All-City running back Joe Villarreal and the versatile Sultan Moala.

Most City Section games will be played on Thursday this week.
