Football: Granada Hills takes control of West Valley League
Granada Hills hasn’t won a West Valley League football title since 1999, but the Highlanders moved into position on Friday night to end the drought after a 28-14 victory over Taft. That comes after knocking off preseason favorite Birmingham last week.
Middle linebacker Jonathan Pena continued his outstanding play since returning from an injury with eight individual tackles and a fumble recovery.
Quarterback Ramon Johnson was 14 of 20 for 202 yards and one touchdown. He also ran for a touchdown. Xavier Salazar rushed for 159 yards.
Ryan Willmore made seven tackles, blocked a punt and had seven catches for 111 yards.
“It’s a great feeling,” Coach Billy Parra said of his team’s rise in league play after a 1-4 mark in nonleague action.
In other City Section action, Garfield received six touchdowns from Ty’Jon Delancy in a 57-33 Eastern League win over South Gate. Lavell Thompson rushed for 215 yards and three touchdowns for South Gate. Garfield took over first place in league when South East defeated Roosevelt, 38-27.
Venice defeated University, 48-0, in the Western League and has outscored its two league opponents, 97-0. Alijah Lee rushed for 221 yards. Alexander Diamont passed for 215 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 62 yards.
Isaiah Gable scored three touchdowns to help Arleta improve to 7-0 with a 53-6 win over North Hollywood.
