Football: Marvin Sanders era begins for Loyola on Friday
Former USC and Nebraska assistant coach Marvin Sanders begins his first year as head coach at Los Angeles Loyola on Friday against Harvard-Westlake, and expect the Cubs to send running back Nico Evans again and again behind linemen John Turner and Chris Brown. It’s going to be let’s see if you can stop the Cubs running the ball.
“We’re going to try to establish the run first, absolutely,” Sanders said.
Sophomore Tre Polamalu, the son of former USC assistant Kennedy Polamalu, a Loyola assistant, will start at quarterback.
Sanders’ big adjustment is trying to figure out how much information to give to his players. He doesn’t have a grad assistant to enter everything into a computer, so it’s up to him, if he has the time between teaching a couple of P.E. classes and other duties.
“I’m having fun, but I have to decide what to do and what not do do as a coach,” he said. “How much information to give them. I don’t want to slight the players not giving them information useful for them.”
Evans performed well in a scrimmage last week against Long Beach Cabrillo.
Loyola has lots of USC connections. The Cubs’ sophomore team quarterback, Avery Allen, is the nephew of former Trojan standout Marcus Allen.
