Football: The UCLA connection at Campbell Hall has program on the rise

Share

Dennis Keyes, a former standout defensive back at Birmingham High and UCLA, has three former Bruins on his Campbell Hall staff _ Chris Markey, Marcus Everett and Jared Page.

Together, they’ve turned around a program that once was playing a JV schedule and forfeiting games for lack of players.

Campbell Hall is 7-0 after defeating Viewpoint, 24-17.

Keyes was an assistant at Birmingham and Chaminade before taking over at Campbell Hall three years ago. The parents were in an uproar. The program was in trouble.

Keyes helped reinvigorate, if not restart, the program.

Now the Vikings are moving forward and have games ahead against Brentwood and Paraclete.

Receiver-defensive back Antonio Brown has had a big season.

“It was just a matter of buying in,” Keyes said. “We had to teach a lot of the kids how to play football again.”

When not talking Campbell Hall football, the group of UCLA alumni talk Bruin football.

“All the time,” Keyes said.
