Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant was a unanimous pick as National League rookie of the year, and Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa earned the honor in the American League.

Bryant made his debut on April 17 and became an All-Star. The 23-year-old hit .275, leading all rookies with 26 home runs, 31 doubles and 99 runs batted in as Chicago returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2008

He received all 30 first-place votes for 150 points from the Baseball Writers’ Assn. of America in balloting announced Monday. San Francisco third baseman Matt Duffy was second with 70 points and Pittsburgh infielder Jung Ho Kang third with 28 points.

Correa, the top pick in the 2012 amateur draft, made his debut June 8 and hit .279 with 22 homers, 68 RBIs and 14 steals, helping the Astros make their first postseason appearance in a decade. The youngest position player in the major leagues, he turned 21 in September.

Correa received 17 firsts and 13 seconds for 124 points. Cleveland Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor was second with 13 firsts, 14 seconds and two thirds for 109 points, and Minnesota Twins designated hitter Miguel Sano was third with 20 points.

The Seattle Mariners acquired outfielder Leonys Martin from Texas as part of a four-player trade that sent right-handed reliever Tom Wilhelmsen to the Rangers. Texas also obtained outfielder James Jones, and Seattle received right-handed reliever Anthony Bass.

Martin is coming off a down year with the Rangers but is excellent defensively and likely moves into the starting center field role. Martin played in 92 games, missing most of August and September after breaking a bone in his right hand, but still had 13 outfield assists. Two seasons ago, Martin hit .274 in 155 games and had 11 outfield assists.

Wilhelmsen was 2-2 with a 3.19 earned-run average and had 13 saves after transitioning into the closer’s role late in the season.
