49ers will ban tailgating at Candlestick Park parking lot after games start

The San Francisco 49ers will ban tailgating in the parking lot of Candlestick Park after games start, and season-ticket holders caught misbehaving on video will have their passes revoked in moves announced Monday after violence marred an exhibition against the Oakland Raiders.

In addition, 49ers Chief Executive Jed York said he would recommend to the NFL that the annual preseason game between the archrival 49ers and Raiders be put off next year.

“This is a game where you have a rivalry situation and, unfortunately, you have the worst segment from a very small segment of both fan bases that come and bring about this type of event,” York said. “It’s our belief that we should recommend to the NFL that this game is at least postponed for some period of time.”

York later said, “I think that’s an easier solution. It’s unfortunate.”

An unnamed NFL official told the San Jose Mercury News that the teams will end their preseason series because of the incidents that occurred Saturday during the 49ers’ 17-3 victory.

Two people were left in critical condition during the game. Gunshots were fired, with one man wearing an anti-49ers shirt reportedly shot multiple times in the stomach.

Gore is not happy

Frank Gore isn’t happy about the lack of progress in his talks with the 49ers over a contract extension.

The two-time Pro Bowl running back said that negotiations are “going slow” and he expects 49ers management to step up and work out a new deal before the regular season begins against Seattle on Sept. 11. He declined to comment about whether he would request a trade if there wasn’t an extension in place by the opener.

“I would be upset,” Gore said. “But I’m a football player. Like I said, I want to be here for my whole career, but it’s up to [them] upstairs, the team. If they want me here, I want to be here.”

The two sides don’t seem anywhere close to reaching a new deal.

The 49ers promised good-faith negotiations with Gore when he ended his four-day holdout and showed up for training camp. New Coach Jim Harbaugh said Sunday he didn’t sense any unhappiness in Gore and wouldn’t get into what he called “water-cooler talk.”

Gore is seeking a contract comparable to the $43-million, five-year deal running back DeAngelo Williams — 20 days older than San Francisco’s star — recently received from the Carolina Panthers. That deal includes $21 million guaranteed.

Gore, making almost $5 million in the final year of his deal, said he plans to play out his contract but will surely test free agency next year if the 49ers don’t give him an extension by his unofficial deadline.

Haynesworth pleads no contest

Defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth pleaded no contest to a charge of simple assault to resolve a case in which he was accused of touching a waitress’ breast while having drinks with friends at a Washington hotel.

If he stays out of trouble over the next 18 months and completes 160 hours of community service, prosecutors will drop the charge entirely. Haynesworth, who was recently traded from the Washington Redskins to the New England Patriots, appeared in D.C. Superior Court to enter his plea.

The 49ers traded safety Taylor Mays to the Cincinnati Bengals for an undisclosed draft pick, according to ESPN. … Denver Broncos Coach John Fox selected Kyle Orton as his starting quarterback. Fox said Tim Tebow and Brady Quinn have two more exhibitions to win the job as Orton’s primary backup. … Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said he won’t announce a starting quarterback between Rex Grossman and John Beck for the regular season until “right before” the Sept. 11 opener against the New York Giants. … San Diego Chargers linebacker Stephen Cooper will have surgery on a torn biceps and be out two to three months. Cooper was hurt in an exhibition victory at Dallas on Sunday night. Chargers wide receiver Patrick Crayton has bone spurs in an ankle and will have arthroscopic surgery. He’s expected to be out 10 days to two weeks. … Green Bay Packers linebacker Frank Zombo is sidelined indefinitely after breaking one of his shoulder blades. … Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Kevin Williams missed practice because of a foot injury and the team has sent him to see a specialist to help determine the severity of his condition. … The Pittsburgh Steelers signed veteran offensive lineman Trai Essex to a one-year contract. Britt was arrested twice in New Jersey and surrendered himself on two arrest warrants in Tennessee for giving inaccurate information on driver’s license applications.
